It is important to remember that vastus medialis comprises two parts: the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus medialis longus. The VMO is the only medial patella stabiliser during knee extension and it is deficiency of this part that will allow the patella to drift laterally in extension (Maurer, et. al. 1995).
The VMO is lower bit of the muscle that moves over the top of the kneecap and helps stablise it.
All I know is that femoral epicondyle causes my knee to hurt like the beejessus when the Ilio tibial band snaps back over it.
