I was more upset when we lost Bill Noke at the same time to the Donkeys rather than Johns.
We still had Brad Mackay, Mark Coyne, Mick Beattie etc.
Atleast Billy came straight back to us and even Captained us to a great win over the Bullgrubs in 89 at Kogarah,
Ricky Walford and Paul Osborne were unstoppable that day.
unfortunately noke never came anywhere near repeating his form of '85. he was one of the big disappointments of mine because he had awesome potential as he showed that season. he was a dreadful trainer & lost control of his weight.
marc glanville should have been the one to step up to fill noke's boots but he was poached by newcastle. i don't know if anyone remembers glanville when he was in our under 23's but he was so far ahead of every other single player in that competition in '85 that it was astounding. he was head & shoulders the absolute gun coming through the ranks & we only lost one game during the season (and from memory he missed it.)
to this day however, the most bitter experience player-wise was letting o'connor go. i still can't forgive it. johnston, beattie were great together, but beattie's best years were actually '84-85 - he sustained a leg injury in the semi against the dogs that we won in '85 to make the grand final & was never the same after. he was solid but never again quite as good.
imo if we'd kept johns alongside keeping o'connor with johnston & walford on the wings, we would have been a far more dangerous side.
alas what ifs fill the psyche of a saints supporter. especially from that era - '84-'85 still burns.
