Does Karmichael ever want to be a relevant sportsman again?

Yes, he was clearly in poverty playing for the Broncos.

You do realise that other players knocked back bigger AFL pay cheques to stay in RL?

And with the new salary cap and tv rights deal, how much more is he being paid than he would have if he stayed? Thats the problem with mercenaries, the extra they get for missing other opportunities is not necessarily worth it. If he stays with Brisbane, then post career he has many more opportunities. A good media career - a real option for a high profile player - can reap rewards that far outweigh their playing wage. Sterlo, for instance, maintained his big Parra contract from 1991 in real wages, as have Fatty and Brohman. That's 30 years worth. Lewis, Fittler, Daley, Alexander, both Johns brothers, Gibbs, Roach, Pearce, Harragon et al rode that gravy train. That only happens when you stick to something and build up contracts. In contrast, name one ex League player since Russell Fairfax who has been looked after by Union - apart from Michael O'Connor - and they were both Union players originally.

Cutie and Folau have taken short term gain instead of long term opportunity.

I cant see Folau getting a gig commenting about any code...so he had to take the coin where he could.

Hunt, well, he is a major dissapointment cause you know how highly i rated him (Even though you and many didnt) and he jumped to a crap code.

Good on both of them. Take the money and run.
Rugby league is the only sport I follow, but why should I hold a grudge on blokes for making hay while the sun shines?

Could have said the same about Tallis 5 years ago too.

My point was the growing network players get within their club/code by staying. Media is only one career opportunity - coaching (Furner, Daley, Flanagan, Cartwright et al) and admin (Matt Gidley) are others. Nathan Cayless got into real estate I believe through sponsors, and his profile in the local area. Contrast that to how well the Union old boys network look after the likes of Farr Jones, Gregan et-al, compared to ex Leagueies.

Hunt, well, he is a major dissapointment cause you know how highly i rated him (Even though you and many didnt) and he jumped to a crap code.
And thats the other part of it. Brisbane would have looked after him, and the business network that underpins them and the QLD origin side is phenomenal. I remember reading a story on how this network set up Willie Carne's printing business in his latter playing days.

In comparison to Inglis, Thurston, Smith et-al?

Come back in a decade and compare Smith's profile post career, and his earnings, to Hunt or Folau?

Hunt is just a run of the mill carefactor sportsman now playing in a team of losers.

But good luck to him.

I'm sorry, but why is Karmichael Hunt irrelevant as far as sports people go?

He has played 39 games in two and a half seasons, which isn't a bad representation level, so he must be relatively highly thought of in the code he has chosen to represent.

He may not be in the top echelon of players in AFL, but he wasn't supposed to be. What he was required to do is to provide a high profile name in an area where AFL was little watched. Actually it probably still is. I don't watch Suns games so I wouldn't know. But the point it he was hired to be a high profile face of the game in the region his club represents. Ablett is probably the bigger name, but I bet cutie is the second name anyone would know at the club.

In a way I agree with Loudy - he gave up the opportunity to have a legacy in a Queensland glory period. I doubt few businessmen in QLD will want to reward him in the future for going to AFL - but he does have a legacy. He has played League, Union and AFL and been good at all three. More than Folau managed. So he does have a legacy of sorts - even if it's not going to give him a life after AFL.

However if he invests wisely with the money he has made out of AFL he doesn't need a high paying life after AFL. All he needs is some investment properties generating income and to stay away from Casinos.

I notice the biggest AFL detractors all seem to be Parramatta supporters. I guess 25 years of your team being irrelevant could lead to such resentment

As much as you have it would have been a biggun

If you think back 13 years ago the AFL didn't need NRL recruits to promote teams in NRL heartland like the GC and western Sydney.
