ANZ pays teams $100,000 minimum per game
I think you have to pay to use the SFS

Doesn't mean it can't be more profitable depending on how many fans you can get in and the deal you have. Lets say it costs you 200k to hire SFS for the game but you keep all gate receipts. You get crowds of 20,000 at an average $20 a head, that is doubling your income on gate receipts. As usual the clubs look for the easy no work option, took the easy money and now face the reality of disappearing fan bases.

How is it that SA is able to offer such good deals but the SFS can't or won't?

People at SA slept through their economics classes. They must have read the first chapter of the marketing book - the one about giving samples away.

Simple answer is that these payments are unsustainable. This is obvious to anyone outside of the SA team and a few NRL club bosses.

It's partly that (i.e. trying to attract clubs though sweet heart and probably temporary deals). It's also partly to do with advantages of scale and a different business model.

The SFS probably could do something like that, perhaps not to the same scale, but are pursuing a different strategy. This would not be surprising given ANZ Stadium is a corporate organisation and the SFS is run by a government trust.

Do you really believe that a private company is underwriting the guaranteed payments?

The point was more that a privately operated stadium is more likely to aggressively pursue tenants and be able to adopt more aggressive business models, which may include significant guaranteed payments.

Particularly when it is public funds getting thrown around. Aggressively pursuing tenants is one thing - handing out cash is evidence that you are at the bottom of the ideas barrel.

I would have no problem with this so-called business model if it was a private company and company funds. Their risk- their reward.

The way it is being done now is the opposite - our risk, their reward. And they are playing around with more than just public funds. They are losing fans of live footy as well - so it is both short and long term damage being done.

I'm sure that ANZ bank owns the stadium currently. It is not a publicly owned thing.

From the stadium australia website..

ANZ Stadium Corporate Structure

ANZ Stadium is operated by the Stadium Australia Group (SAG), comprising Stadium Australia Trust (SAT) and Stadium Australia Management Limited (SAM) under the terms of a Lease from the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA). In accordance with the lease, which expires on 31 January 2031, SAG is responsible for the operation, marketing and maintenance of ANZ Stadium. On expiry of the Lease, operation of the Stadium will revert to SOPA.
SAG is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stadium Investments Pty Ltd (SIPL), a company which is wholly owned by Diversified Infrastructure Trust (DIT). DIT is managed by ANZ Infrastructure Services Limited and its responsible entity is ANZ Specialist Asset Management Limited. DIT has interests in other infrastructure assets and has a range of institutional investors including ANZ.

I thought ANZ just sponsored the ground and held the loans. I don't think they own the ground.

Here's an idea. The NRL buys SFS and moves games there. Better look on TV and maybe better crowds.

Not until the State govt can work out how to make the light rail run past the joint. Probably something the NRL, AFL and Cricket Australia should get together and lobby the state government for.
