Don Furner and Adrian Purtell were interviewed by Tim Gavel on ABC grandstand about the contract situation of players at the club. In summary:

Purtell - Has been given a 3 year counter offer by the club and hopes to make a decision within the next week or two. He said the attraction of Melbourne was the opportunity to play in the centres, whereas in Canberra he feels he is behind Monaghan and Graham. He still enjoys being at the club though and said it will be a hard decision. Only Melbourne and Canberra have offered him a contract and both are for 3 years.

Hinchcliffe - Furner has spoken to Ryan and has told him he would like to see how he goes when he gets back on the park. Furner said there was still a real opportunity for him to get a contract extension.

Campese - Furner has not heard from Campos manager in over a week. He is going to talk to Campo directly this week to see how he's going.

Justin Carney - Contract talks have gone backwards and forwards with a few revised offers from the club. Furner sounded hopeful of keeping him on board.

Costigan - Furner basically conceded that Nev will go if he gets an offer from up north, but has not heard anything official from him yet.

Nathan Smith - Has indicated he wants to return and the club has made an offer. Nothing has been confirmed yet and talks are continuing.

Millward - We haven't heard back from him yet and the club is also looking at other options for an assistant coach.

Ihope Purtell stays,he looks like he is enjoying himself, has a fair bit of passion too.

With Graham out ,no doubt he will get his chance but atm Chalk is giving the team some starch in defence and Monaghan has the other spot wrapped up.

Melbourne are in the position we were 15 years ago and realise the value of stroking a fringe/less than 50 game players ego.

How much say does young Dave Furner have when it comes to player retention and new players coming to the club , I cant see the value in Nat Smith , or is he Nev's replacement , and with Hinchy I cant see us carrying 3 FG hookers then there is Buttriss as well, so one or two gotta go.
Justin Carney is a must , didnt realise that he was off contract.

Campo , Carney , Purts are a must

God. Why oh why oh why oh why would we ever ever ever EVER want Nathan Smith back.

He's a b grade outside back and a mediocre backrower, and we have several better players in both decision.

Why piss away our cap money like that?

The rumoured offer is 200k but his first priority is Penrith.

Good work by management, start with a low offer than come over the top with an offer he can't refuse.

He's taking the piss you goose.

Nathan Smith -- FFS, he makes Gafa look like Daley. What a waste of cap space. No thanks, stay at Penrith.
