Double try set for All Stars game on the Gold Coast in February
November 24, 2009
A 'double try' innovation will be part of the inaugural rugby league All Stars game to be played next February.
The Indigenous and NRL All Stars will be able to opt for an extra play rather than a conversion in an attempt to score four more points in the match, to be played on the Gold Coast on February 13.
The move is one of several designed to increase the entertainment factor for the game, which will commemorate the anniversary of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generation.
Others include the use of four referees, coaches Neil Henry and Wayne Bennett wearing microphones and the video referee explaining decisions to the broadcasters' commentary team.
Bennett was on hand on Tuesday to launch voting for the NRL team he will coach.
“It's a great concept for the fans and I'm sure they'll come up with a great team,” he said.
Voting will take place in two stages, with the first ending on December 26.
The Australian and New Zealand Test captains and vice captains are automatic selections with each NRL club to be represented in the other 16.
The Indigenous All Stars 20-man squad has already been selected by vote.
