GROWING pains could deprive Melbourne Storm of its most potent attacking weapon in Sunday's qualifying final against Parramatta.
Teenage star Greg Inglis was last night taken for MRI scans after he was unable to train for a second straight day with Achilles tendon pain. Inglis missed almost two months earlier this year, including the final two matches of Queensland's State-of-Origin campaign with back stress fractures.
The latest injury worry is not though to be linked to the back problem but is another symptom of the 19-year-old's recent rapid growth.
"It is not an injury it is more just growing pains," Storm physiotherapist Mary Toomey said last night.
"He's been getting them in different spots and it is just a matter of us monitoring and controlling his training load.
"He'll have some scans but they are more precautionary than anything. We're pretty confident he'll be OK. He has had pain in a range of different areas but after a few days they normally settle down.
"This one is taking a little bit longer but with a light workload he should be fine."
It is understood Storm will not take risks with the talented ball runner who has scored 17 tries in as many matches this year.
As minor premier, Storm is assured of progressing to the second week of playoffs -- but it can earn a week off and a preliminary final berth with win over the eighth-placed Eels on Sunday.
Storm coach Craig Bellamy yesterday named a 20-man squad with forwards Jeremy Smith and Adam Blair recalled and centre Jake Webster on standby for Inglis.
Inglis last night said he was desperate to play.
"I have been a bit sore, but I don't think there is any major dramas," Inglis said.
"I am having a bit of trouble running, but I'm confident I'll be fine by the weekend.
"It is my first chance to play in a home final and you never know how many of those you are going to get in your career. It is a massive game for the club and I really want to be out there."
Parramatta's chances were lifted with the return from injury of prop Michael Vella and skipper Nathan Cayless.
STORM'S stunning on-field success continues to pay off financially with the club last night welcoming caravan giant Jayco back into its sponsorship stable.
MANLY hooker Shayne Dunley is free to play in Friday night's first qualifying final against Newcastle after he entered an early guilty on a grade one dangerous throw charge for his crude tackle on Melbourne's Matt Geyer on Saturday night.
THE BULLDOGS yesterday received another injury blow, with star lock Reni Maitua ruled out for up to two weeks with a a meniscul tear in his left knee.
Maitua is the third Bulldog to be struck down by a knee injury in the past month, joining prop Roy Asotasi and centre Willie Tonga on the sidelines.
