In my opinion whoever is our new CEO it will be someone who takes the-position will be focusing on the team realizing it's potential and being one of the heavy weight of the NRL.

I would assume he will be on a performance based contract. To achieve this I would expect that there would be a clean out of the coaching staff and I would expect the coaching staff would be on a contract with a performance based clause.

I have been really looking forward to 2018. But 2019 is going to be a whole lot better.

ST GEORGE Illawarra CEO Peter Doust’s reign at the Dragons helm will come to an end, with the game’s longest serving chief executive confirming he’ll retire at season’s end.

The club confirmed on Thursday that the 2018 season will be his last in charge of the joint-venture, though it’s likely he’ll remain with the club as a board member.

Doust said in a statement that the time was right for him to move on, with his final season enough time for the club to implement a succession plan.

"I have, and will continue, to thoroughly enjoy my time in the role," Doust said.

"I feel very fortunate and privileged to have been afforded the opportunity to be the CEO of the Dragons and to have had a career in rugby league.

"I made the decision over the holiday break, in consultation with my family, and I wanted to give Brian [Chairman Brian Johnston] appropriate notice to allow he and the board, the opportunity to plan for the future.

"Essentially after 25 years in health care and 18 years in rugby league, I am at the stage in my life where I would like the time to pursue other interests. Rugby league by its very nature, never stops.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the role, and am extremely passionate about the club and remain focused on its objectives before I finish-up.”

One of the most polarising figures in rugby league, Doust’s retirement will no doubt be welcomed by sections of the red v faithful who’ve long called for his resignation.

Thursday’s announcement ensures he will go out on his own terms. Bringing Wayne Bennett to the Dragons in 2009 will no doubt go down as his crowning achievement.

The club broke a 31-year premiership drought under the supercoach a year later but missing the finals in five of the past six seasons has seen him come under fire from fans.

It will see considerable debate over his legacy, though Doust said on Thursday: “I don’t believe that now is the time to reflect on my time at the Dragons.”

With only a year left on his contract Doust is expected to turn his attention to securing WIN Corporation’s long mooted purchase of the club.

Prepare to be disappointed.

We all know the club will recruit within in order to fill Doust's impending departure, right?

Of all the different aspects of Doust's long tenure, I've never understood how he was able to stay in his current role when he was only appointed due to his predecessor's, Brian Johnston's, poor health.

I thought an agreement was in place for Johnston's return after he was well enough to do so.

And they say that pigs don't fly ! Well Iam absolutely amazed , this did come out of the blue . What can one say , I am just astounded by the news and as others have already suggested - this could have something to do with the takeover ? Let's hope so , regardless only good can come from his resignation . Happy days ahead , the Joint Venture can finally move forward . Thank the good Lord for small mercies !

They do say once in a Blue moon or should it be once in a blood orange super blue moon. Finally happened ,thank you

Back room compromises have been a feature of the club's management during Doust's tenure.
How Doust was appointed and how McGregor ended up as head coach, are examples of an endemic old boys club culture.
What happens next will affect the club's future for the next 20 years.
With high quality management in place that will run the business based on results, we have every right to be optimistic about the future.
Put a broom through the place - get rid of the factions and the seat warners and run the club with the view to winning premierships.
We have a great brand (get rid of "Illawarra" and it will be even better), great juniors and fans who are passionate and love the club.
Get a real street wise coach in there and that will be the cherry on top for me.
Let's hope Doust's departure heralds a new era of glory for this grand old club.

Good morning & how unreal that It wasn't a dream. I can only think that Doust gave them such long notice of his departure in order fo pay back the NRL debt he accumulated & complete the Steelers 50% share buy out by WIN.
I understand that WIN would supply 3 of the 6 Board members of the JV & therefore flush out The Illawarra Steelers cronies.
Hopefully the factions & boys club mentality gets flushed out and it's a Win Win for the club with smart successful business management to lead us forward.

Dragons CEO Peter Doust quits after almost two decades with St George Illawarra

Michael Carayannis, The Daily Telegraph
February 1, 2018 7:59pm
OUTGOING Dragons boss Peter Doust’s final gift to St George Illawarra will be finalising the club’s new ownership structure with WIN Corporation.

The Daily Telegraph broke the news on Thursday afternoon of Doust’s decision to sensationally quit the club after almost two decades at the helm.

He will see out the remainder of his contract, staying on until the end of St George Illawarra’s season.

While Doust is expected to take a back seat to some of the long-term decisions regarding the club, his main task will be finalising the deal with WIN — who intend to purchase Illawarra’s share of the joint venture. The company’s multimillion-dollar owner Bruce Gordon is in Sydney with Doust now free to focus on fast-tracking the deal to sell-off the Steelers’ remaining share.

Doust has been in charge of the Dragons since 2000.
Doust called representatives from WIN to inform them of his decision. His stepping down could force a raft of changes within the Dragons organisation.

He is expected to retain a place on the respective Dragons, St George Leagues and Football club boards, at least in the short-term.

But his decision to move on could see a shake-up of the Dragons management structure.

The first major sign of a generational change at the club happened last year when Warren Lockwood stood down as chairman after 16 years and was replaced by Brian Johnston.

Doust and Johnston have been the only chief executives since the joint venture came into being in late 1998. Doust replaced the former Dragons and Kangaroos player in 2000.

The longest serving boss in the game said he had come to the decision during the Christmas break.

Dragons supporters hold up a banner reading “Oust Doust” at Kogarah Oval.
“Essentially after 25 years in health care and 18 years in rugby league, I am at the stage in my life where I would like the time to pursue other interests. Rugby league, by its very nature, never stops,” Doust said in a statement.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the role, and am extremely passionate about the club and remain focused on its objectives before I finish up. However, I don’t believe that now is the time to reflect on my time at the Dragons.”

The Dragons will start the process of replacing Doust at the club’s next board meeting later this month. WIN will want to have a say regarding who runs the club — especially if they are given the chairmanship as expected. Gordon’s son Andrew already sits on the St George Illawarra board.

A polarising figure among Dragons fans, who have brandished the “Oust Doust” sign at games for more than a decade, Doust’s greatest achievement was no doubt luring supercoach Wayne Bennett to the club. That culminated in the Dragons’ 2010 premiership win — breaking a drought lasting more than 30 years.

His late father Laurie was also a long serving director of St George and played a key role in the club’s 11-year premiership run. Johnston paid tribute to Doust.

“His loyalty to the club, the staff and players has always been unwavering and we are very fortunate to have had him leading our club as CEO,” Johnston said.

“Rugby league is a very challenging and dynamic environment and he deserves enormous credit for his leadership, trust and resilience.”

Like I said tom
Gordon is clearing the decks.
When ever there is a takeover the ceo goes.
Keep watching

This is fabulous news. Good riddance

Says a lot about us mentally battered supporters that many of us in this thread are still reluctant to celebrate, given the huge problems still sitting in our board room

I'll pour a Crownie out for Doustie and myself tonight though

Id like to know will he resign from the JV football club and Leagues club boards, id say he wont be, why stay on a year? Will he play a part in CEO being selected?

Nothing will change until all the dinosour mates of doust go also. There embarrassing

I bought season tickets again this year I rang the club they cant even tell u, where your seats will be, so they expect u to buy season tickets but u wont know where you will sit.

I said no im not buying where I don’t know where I’ll be sitting. They said ok I’ll get someone from the allocation team back 2 weeks later no call back.I called back and they said oh sorry we forgot, fg amatuers.

Hopefully, the last of the old dinosours running the leagues club also disappear as they are sitting on a very large parcel of land which they should re-develop into cafes/restaurants/hotel/etc.

The cancer is there Doust leaving wont solve a thing...

Doust going is great news.

Concerned with who will replace him.

Cant get happy about the WIN buyout just yet. Reports are they are buying the Illawarra part of the JV, Gordon already virtually owns this with his loan. What do St George actually get out of it? I am withholding my enthusiasm for this until I hear the details. Things have been so bad for so long, its easy to jump at every carrot that's held out to you. It seems a bit like the emperors new clothes scenario to me at this stage. I hope like hell I'm wrong. I'd rather be wrong and basking in the glory of a successful Dragons than right and suffering more of the same.
