Essentially, the NRL were saying that they needed to take games away from suburban venues and move them to Homebush and the SFS, The aim of this action was to entice more government investment into the large neutral venues like Homebush, at the expense of suburban venues like Kogarah. The assumption from the NRL is that this will make Sydney more competitive with the one team towns and encourage all Sydney clubs to work together in order to meet these ends.
He further justified this by saying there had been no government investment into Rugby League grounds but plenty of government investment into AFL and cricket grounds, and the NRL needs teams like to Dragons to help bring games to Homebush.
None of this make sense to me. For a start, plenty of government money has been invested into Kogarah and the upgrades have turned it into a fine asset for the NRL, with an official capacity of over 20,000. Plus, if the plan was to get more leverage for Rugby League by playing at Homebush and the SFS, then why are we playing at the SCG?
Worth noting that since this recording was made, the NRL crowds have been on a downward slide. So how is the RGRV 'strategy' working out?
