AFL’S NO NAME BRANDS
The AFL have received another brutal reminder of the challenge they face in western Sydney after GWS was rated the one of the least valuable sporting brands among the country’s football codes — above only the Gold Coast Suns. It also shows how much their expansion teams have struggled despite the code tipping in millions of dollars.
GWS’s brand was valued at a dismal $30 million by Brand Finance Australia — about a quarter of the Brisbane Broncos and well below the highest rated sporting club in the country, Collingwood.
The Gold Coast Titans were the worst-performing NRL club, slightly above the Suns in a sign of how the Gold Coast market is a tough nut to crack.
Surprisingly, the once powerful Dragons brand sit just above the Titans and below arch rivals Cronulla with a $35 million value.
The AFL has ploughed millions into western Sydney but it appears they have little to show for it even though the Giants have been a relative success on the field.
The Brand Finance Australia report suggests western Sydney is still well and truly in the hands of rugby league.
Four-time premier Penrith ($108 million) are the fourth-ranked sporting brand in the country behind only Collingwood, the Brisbane Broncos and Carlton.
Parramatta ($71m) and the Bulldogs ($51m) also feature prominently among rugby league clubs on the list, while even the Wests Tigers - despite collecting three successive wooden spoons — are estimated to have a brand value of $42 million.

The entire Board should stand down in shame after seeing those figures.

Might as well call them the Illawarra Steelers, St George was equivalent to Collingwood.
Just retire the great St George brand, as they have destroyed it, in every way.
The McGregor era had everything to with it.

I can blame much on Mary, but not our Brand decline.

He was our 6th coach after Waite, Farrah, Brown, Bennett, and Price. The board extended his tenure.

Until the Directors change, then not much will. They are the only common denominator. Mary was inept as was Price as was Farrah, and Griffin. Brown was thrown into the role way too early.

The " brand " was fine under Bennett. In fact, for 3 years we were dominating on and off the field.

We should have gone to Super League. The brand would be strong today.
In 1997 12 teams played ARL

10 teams played super league.

Only 3 of the ARL teams from that year survive unscathed to this day. Others had to merge or are gone completely. And souffs who went and came back

7 of the 10 super league clubs are unscathed.

Superleague won the war.

Gorden Tallis said recently that the plan by Super League management was to relocate the Dragons to Adelaide if they joined the Super League competition.
The major sponsor, Penfolds at that time, had their head office in Adelaide, plus there was no team there.
If that story is correct, they may well have killed off our brand.

We were destined not to remain the St George Dragons then. It certainly would not have been any good having the club that I have followed since I was a young kid based in Adelaide. No way would that have gone down well with me.

The joint venture Club has just got to work on its image and enhance it to ensure that the modern Dragons Brand is solid for decades to come.

Yeah, and Melbourne was mentioned at some stage as well.
