More likely 20,000+ instead of 17,000+

The points are made earlier in the thread.

Better to move a WIN game there, it gets smaller crowds compared to Kogarah. But infortunately there's this restrictive contract which se Wollongong guaranteed 50% while Kogarah has to make the concessions.

Following media speculation over the weekend, The St George Illawarra Dragons wish to advise there has not been any decision on the Round 24 Dragons home game against the Tigers being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Dragons have received an expression of interest from the SCG Trust, supported by the NRL.

Round 24 is the NRL’s “60s week” and the NRL has asked the Dragons to consider switching the game from Oki Jubilee Stadium to the SCG as a flashback to and feature of their “60’s week” promotions.

The St George RLFC experienced great success throughout the 1960s and the request will be considered by the St George Illawarra Board later this month.

“We are conscious of our ongoing playing commitments in our key communities within our region,” said Dragons Chairman Warren Lockwood. “A financial incentive has been offered and all pertinent factors will be considered when the proposal is discussed”.

The St George heritage and its link to the Sydney Cricket Ground will be obvious to all St George and St George Illawarra supporters and the St George Illawarra Dragons cherish such opportunities in the interests of the game of rugby league.

Members and supporters will be informed of the Club’s decision relating to the venue for this Round 24 match in due course.

I'll be dissapointed but not surprised when the Jubilee match is moved to the SCG...

Didn't they learn anything from the 80's - geeze it was a happy hunting ground for us then.

This sint good work fromthe WIN, if anyone misses out it probly should be Win asthey've had the advantage inthepast.
If you weregunna have one year SCG game was home, the next Anzac was home, it could basically alternate 6/5 every year, which is the logical way of doing.

Unfortunately logic in league administration is long f**kengone.

Look like a gimme with this little edict:
The St George heritage and its link to the Sydney Cricket Ground will be obvious to all St George and St George Illawarra supporters and the St George Illawarra Dragons cherish such opportunities in the interests of the game of rugby league.

Sorry Dragons... you might mean well but, 'obvious to all'? Fair go...

The Club are contracted to playing 50% of games at WIN Stadium. This agreement is tied in with WIN Corp (TV) and directly or indirectly with the Wollongong Stadium Trust. This agreement being the subsequent fallout to the Illawarra part of the joint venture selling a chunk of their shares to to WIN Corp.

The agreement with Kogarah Jubilee and Kogarah Council isn't nearly as restrictive. The benevolence of the JV majority shareholder is astounding to say the least.

<sarcasm alert>

Plus there are those who seem to think Moore Park is part of the St George Parish. Ask any Souths and Easts supporter and they'll tell you they go to the SCG to watch Saints play.

You're in the same boat Scarcev. How would it be if they took a Leichhardt game off you for the same reason. You blokes think of your home ground in the same way we do. The NRL can't refuse to recognise the past if they think they can grab those sides and use the past as a revenue raiser. :(

unlike your mob we have a deal with telstra stadium already , they could start up a big stink if we started playing games at scg

according to this email I recieved today, there's still 5 games at Oki this year

Rare Opportunity - Oki Jubilee Dragon's Premier Suite!

As one of the historic grounds in the NRL, corporate hospitality facilities at OKI Jubilee Stadium are not as plentiful as many other grounds, which is why it is a rare opportunity when a Premier Suite becomes available for purchase. The last available Premier Suite accommodates 20 persons and is located in the lower western grandstand at OKI Jubilee Stadium. Due to renovations the Dragons are yet to play a match at OKI Jubilee Stadium, so you haven't missed a match! There are five blockbuster matches to be played at OKI this season with the first big clash taking place against the Eels in the first weekend of June. Package inclusions: 5 games Oki Jubilee Stadium (Eels, Rabbitohs, Bulldogs, Storm and Tigers)
. Beverage Starter Pack (Beer, wine, pre mixed spirits, soft drink, water) . Food Starter Pack
. TV Monitor with action replays
. Complimentary Big Leagues
. 4 Matchday VIP carparking passes
. 4 State of Origin (Sydney) tickets
. 4 Grand Final Tickets
. 4 Red V Supporter Kits
. Club Lifestyle Membership For further information please email agrose@dragons.com.au

The website are still saying the tickets for round 24 are not available and depends on the decision of the proposed venue switch.

Contacting the Club can't hurt, and will have more effect if it is polite and reasonably straight forward:

http://www.dragons.com.au/contactus/index.asp

Alternatively, you can contact them by phone or mail:
Kogarah Office: 02 9587 1966
Postal Address: Locked Bag 1500, Ramsgate NSW 2217
Office Address: 124 Princes Hwy, Kogarah NSW 2217
Wollongong Office: 02 4225 8299

This Year?

I hope it doesn't get moved to the SCG. Would that mean you could only drink light beer??? I can understand the SCG history with RL but what about the history with Kogarah?? DRAGONS HOME GAME. MUST BE KOGARAH. Even though it would be more convenient for me to go to the game at the SCG, I still think the St George base supporters are entitled to the 5 (should be more) Kogarah games a year. I wonder what the older players/fans think about the move????

DRAGONS NEWS:
Local Councillors voice support for Jubilee

Local Councillors voice support for Jubilee St.George Councillors have voiced their concern over the prospect of the Dragons shifting their round 24 St.George heritage match against the Wests Tigers from OKI Jubilee Stadium to the SCG.

The round 24 home game is part of the NRL's "Sixties Week" and the SCG Trust and the NRL have approached the Dragons to request that the fixture be moved from the St.George District to Moore Park.

Kogarah season ticketholders have reacted furiously to the possibility of OKI Jubilee Stadium losing one of its five home games and representatives of the three St.George Councils have echoed their views.

Kogarah Councillor Mark Coure believes that switching the match to the SCG would be detrimental to the local area and that the ground should be being utilised regularly following the recent refurbishments.

"Having the game at OKI Jubilee would benefit local residents and the local community. It's unfortunate that there is talk of moving the match elsewhere, considering the large amounts of time and money that the Federal Government has put into the ground," Mr Coure said.

"The Prime Minister gave $8 million for the latest upgrade and I would like to see more games at Kogarah in the future. The last thing we want to do is reduce the number of games."

Rockdale Deputy Mayor Bill Saravinovski, a key supporter of Rockdale contributing funding to the ground in 2003, is extremely passionate about Kogarah maintaining its full allocation of home games.

"St.George is our team and they should be playing at Jubilee Oval. Rockdale Council agreed to pay $50,000 for the upgrade of Jubilee Oval so we could bring the Saints back to their rightful home and not the SCG," Mr Saravinovski said.

"I would like to remind the Board that St.George is our team and they need to look after the loyal fans and not the NRL Board," Mr Saravinovski added.

The issue of Rockdale Council's financial contribution to OKI Jubilee Stadium also concerns Rockdale's Greens Councillor Lesa de Leau.

"Rockdale Council made a $50,000 investment on behalf of the Rockdale community to help bring the Dragons back to Jubilee. That money could have been used for any number of services, including local sporting facilities. Rockdale is proud to be part of St George, but loyalty and goodwill should not be taken for granted," Ms de Leau stated.

"If a league team wants local support, it must ensure games are accessible to the local community. The community spirit grows when you cheer for your local team at the local ground."

Hurstville Council also signed off on a $50,000 donation to the Jubilee Oval Community Appeal in 2003 following enthusiastic support from Hurstville Councillors such as Steve McMahon. Councillor McMahon highlighted the fact that local businesses would be disadvantaged by the Dragons moving the match away from their St.George key community.

"I support the fixture remaining in Kogarah as a local game means local money," Mr McMahon said.

While the clash with the Tigers is part of the NRL's "Sixties Week" it is also scheduled to be the annual St.George heritage day following the Illawarra heritage day at WIN Stadium in round 2.

"It would certainly be unfortunate if we couldn't host St.George heritage day in the St.George District and go to the five OKI Jubilee Stadium games that many Red V members have paid for in advance," R2K's Lachlan McLean said.

A decision on whether the Tigers match gets relocated to the SCG is expected within days.

"The Prime Minister gave $8 million for the latest upgrade and I would like to see more games at Kogarah in the future. The last thing we want to do is reduce the number of games."
That can be added to the list:

1. Supporters, from the hill to the corporate boxes, have paid for an advertised game at Kogarah.
2. Ground advertisers are already in place. OKI don't have naming rights at the SCG. Are OKI entitled to compensation?
3. Kogarah has already given up enough games. Too many concessions have been given. It is a unbundantly clear that there should be more games at Kogarah, not less.
4. If its a St George heritage/sixties games, then it should be played in St George and at the traditional home ground we've had since 1950.
5. More non-Dragons supporters will be in attendance at the SCG, thus negating the home ground advantage. Many Dragons supporters will not make the trip and will be replaced by neutral or opposition supporters. This is a home game fixture, Kogarah is a home ground. The SCG is not a home ground.
6. Kogarah Councillors are opposed to any switch.
7. Tax payers and Club money was put in to see Saints play at Kogarah.
8. Kogarah is a better rugby league venue than the SCG... the SCG being a cricket ground and all.
9.
10.
11.
Add your own...

One reason I read in favour of this switch is some pitch about the heritage and tradition of the SCG, and round 24 being a '60's week.'

Round 24 is the NRL’s “60s week” and the NRL has asked the Dragons to consider switching the game from Oki Jubilee Stadium to the SCG as a flashback to and feature of their “60’s week” promotions.
...

The St George heritage and its link to the Sydney Cricket Ground will be obvious to all St George and St George Illawarra supporters and the St George Illawarra Dragons cherish such opportunities in the interests of the game of rugby league.
-Dragons website 17/5/2006

'60's week', 'heritage', 'in the interest of rugby league'? OK, let's run with that for a minute...

Last time I checked, St George were playing at Kogarah in the 1960s, and they did play against both Wests and Balmain. And sorry, but the link to the SCG is not 'obvious to all', especially when the match involves a switch from the ground which is the traditional heartland of the Dragons.

The other reason, which isn't fully disclosed, is financial. Perhaps there's a few extra dollars to be made should the Club take up the offer from the SCG Trust.

“We are conscious of our ongoing playing commitments in our key communities within our region,” said Dragons Chairman Warren Lockwood. “A financial incentive has been offered and all pertinent factors will be considered when the proposal is discussed”.
-Dragons website 17/5/2006

In 2005, when Saints were offered to switch venues from Kogarah to the SCG, Peter Doust made it clear that two competition points are more important than making a few quick bucks from a decision made on the run:

Dragons' CEO Peter Doust stated that the Club contemplated the move but “ we have made a commitment to our supporters and corporates and they would have planned this weekend well in advance.”
- Daily Telegraph, August 2005

That was only last year.

Circumstances are slightly different but the issues are still the same. Round 24 will be a packed house if it is played at Kogarah... we all know that. And no one will feel ripped off if we play at the venue that was advertised when we bought our season tickets.

Considering the repeated kick in the guts that the ground has been subjected to in recent years, Kogarah's attendance records has been outstanding.
