Dragons Demand Salary Cap Meeting

I agree HappyG.

Teams that lose key players in the backend of the season should be allowed to blood new players regardless of the rules.

It'll be interesting to see if the same exemption applies to other teams in the future.

To me this is saying the tigers asked for a salary cap exemption and got it. I may have over looked it, but the dragons neved said they asked for an exemption yet are whinging they haven't been given one.

They seem like the. Bloke who sits in the corner of the nightclub all night and complains that he didn't get a root by the end of the night

It is all to do with how you word it.

Dragons called it a back end contract .
Tigers call it a salary exemption .

Can't believe anyone cares.

As if anyone will even go to watch.

Probably be the shittest game of the year.

They may as well trial a few women refs ... That's how important this non event is.

It is time the NRL do what NFL does and have an injured reserve list option. Any player sustaining a long term injury can be Putin injured reserve and removed from salary cap calculations until they return. This will give clubs the option of promoting a promising youngster or someone out of nsw cup etc with no penalty. Might lead to more talent being discovered.

Be funny if the tigers win.

Not as funny as the 79th minute of last Saturday nights game, but still very funny.

f**k what Doust thinks. Running off having a cry to the NRL over a perceived unfair advantage... No we can't have that, don't want to ruin our chances of landing that coveted 14th place.

While Marshall is on the paddock, the opposition will always have the advantage.

I think the tigers should be allowed to play them at the cost of losing a genuine first grader. So say Benji sits out.

This opens up a whole can of worms. I mean if tigers really used the reason as "we are shit so we should be compensated then eels and dragons should be compensated as well.

The Dragons are happy with flexibility such as signing players on backended contracts and having them retire early but not for allowing two NYC players to play in a match that literally means nothing.

You do realise that Gasnier is still actually being paid the balance of his contract and coming under our salary cap?

In any case it's irrelevant. I don't support the 'protest', we're just too shit this year and trying to do anything to secure a win obviously.

The second tier cap should be scrapped. You have a top 25, and anyone below that can earn a maximum amount of X dollars, if they're used so be it. I don't understand why the NRL wants to restrict the blooding of new talent. If they're good enough to replace guys in the top 25, that's fine, their pay is still less than them until they're shifted into the top 25.

tigers injury list:

Robbie Farah (hand), Rd 25
Eddy Pettybourne (ankle). rd 25
Blake Ayshford (eye), season
Aaron Woods (knee), season
Chris Lawrence (ankle), season
Joel Reddy (groin), season
Tim Moltzen (knee), season
Marika Koroibete (cheekbone), season
Matt Utai (jaw), season

9 out of the top 25.

everyone cried for the rules to change when moylan was held back and the nrl is showing some discretion and letting some young blokes have a run..... its the right decision and the nrl should be changing the rules to be more flexible for next season...

anyone crying about this is a nit picking whinger. we want to see young talented players in the top grade... there should be an exemption for any under 20's who are good enough to play nrl.. nsw cup/qld cup players obviously slightly different - but again, there needs to be more flexibility.
Panthers are no longer allowed to play Matt Moylan because Lachlan Coote has returned from injury... nevermind the fact he missed 20 weeks of the NRL and was viewed as our 5/8 for this season. We have to play a bloke who is nowhere near match fit in a position where we didn't want him to be used this season.

The worst part is that we still have a pretty long injury list, and have had plenty of blokes miss big chunks of the season... yet we're still not allowed to give the likes of Bryce Cartright, Vaipuna Tia Kilifi, George Jennings etc. a couple of games to give them a taste for 2014.

I think it sucks that the Tigers get an exemption as it's a different set of rules from other teams... but honestly it's the rules that are stuffed. Any rule that holds young talent back is ridiculous. It makes absolutely no sense at all for clubs to be forced to use inferior players (ie. Wes Naiqama, Cameron Ciraldo etc.) and lower the standard of the NRL, then to give young players a crack and help raise the standard of the NRL in the future.

As a fan I don't want to go out and watch the likes of Naiqama, Ciraldo, Newton etc. run around in first grade. I'm sure most clubs have players running around that are simiarly poor in quality while better talents are held back because of these rules. Meaning fans of all teams suffer in having to settle for a team that's not as good as it can or should be.

I have a problem with some clubs being allowed concessions and not others. You either allow every club, or not at all. You can't pick and choose every time the issue comes up.

And none of this 'only because they're playing another team not in contention for the finals'. It shouldn't matter where the team they are playing is placed, and at what stage of the season it is, the rule should be the same and not changed week to week.

I don't think they do. They just don't think their rules through well enough and fail to adapt when unforeseen circumstances arise. We've all enjoyed the inflexibility of Schubert many times now.

Just goes to show what a mess the current cap is in, it's not like this doesn't happen every year and there is no precedence set for change being required.

The Tigpies are certainly not the first club to be in this situation, and they won't be the last, unless the NRL completely overhaul the cap structure. With luck the review that is being mooted will correct such glaringly obvious problems.

As for the Shoe, I have no idea how this bloke has survived so long. His inability to apply the rules with consistency is simply mind boggling. This being just another example in a litany of cluster f**ked "rulings".

FMD we didn't ask for concessions because we can't play we asked for concessions because we are so busted injury wise we have already exceeded both caps.

If BW steps up on a soapbox it's time to listen, nothing like hearing from the mouths of babes or common sense from an intellectual.

If he retired why is he still getting paid?

Its not like he was injured and couldn't play again during his contract length.

I find that very hard to believe that it is still part of the cap.

Wouldn't him walking away just void the contract.

If the game meant something, I would be upset too. However the game is the battle for 14th. It's not going to cost them a draft pick, a home semi or anything at all really. But if the Dragons aren't whingeing about something. it would be a concern. I copped a lecture on Wednesday about how they could have, should have and would have won every game this year if only for the refs and a couple of unlucky bounces.

Doust said at the members meeting he was getting paid this year.

Backloaded contracts are averaged over the duration of the contract, if either party terminates early, the balance of that contract must still be paid under the salary cap. It's in place to prevent the very situation that everyone complains about with Gasnier retiring early. It isn't a full wage, its simply if a player earns $200,000 less in the first 2 years of a contract than he would in the last 2, then retires, the outstanding balance on the cap would be $100,000 per year, which would get paid to the player and come under the cap. I think the figure was something like $150k still coming out of the cap for Gasnier in 2013.
