PREMIERS St George Illawarra refuse to give up hope of extending the tenure of Wayne Bennett in Wollongong despite mounting speculation that the master coach will soon make public a decision to move elsewhere next year.
Chief executive Peter Doust last night issued a statement to fans on the club's website following a Sun-Herald report saying Bennett had already indicated to Dragons officials that he would not be staying beyond this season, his third at the club.
"We are obviously very keen for Wayne to stay at the club and are presently in discussion with him about extending his contract," Doust said. "Wayne has not advised us that he will be leaving at the end of this season but has advised that he is undecided about his coaching future beyond the 2011 season. Any further updates on these discussions will be provided in due course."

Doust's comments came amid more backroom talk that Bennett had already made up his mind, with sources saying he could announce his intention to leave after the Dragons' visit to England for the World Club Challenge against Wigan on February 27.
Such timing would allow the Dragons to begin the defence of their NRL title a fortnight later without the cloud of doubt hanging over Bennett's future.
Speculation has been rife for weeks that Bennett's primary suitors, South Sydney, have already locked in the seven-time premiership winning coach to take over from the departing John Lang next year.
Among the Dragons faithful some are resigned to the fact he is on the way out, with St George legend Johnny Raper yesterday discussing a successor. ''The players themselves with their ability would enable another coach to be reasonably successful,'' Raper told AAP.
''I'd hate to see him [Bennett] go, but other coaches shouldn't be frightened of accepting any approach made by St George.''
A switch to the Rabbitohs would give Bennett the opportunity to make history by winning premierships with three different clubs, and in the process end the long droughts of the competition's two most famous clubs.
Having steered the Dragons to their first title in 31 years, overseeing a first win since 1971 for South Sydney would leave Bennett with effectively nothing more to achieve in a game on which he has stamped an indelible mark for two decades.
The Rabbitohs are believed to have courted Bennett for months, having known since before the close of last year's campaign that Lang would not continue in the top job beyond this year.
The matter clearly remains a delicate one at Redfern, though, evidenced by owner Russell Crowe's responses to questioning on the subject during a news conference at Star City late last month. Asked by the Herald whether he wanted Bennett to take over at Souths, Crowe said: ''What I think we need to do with this is not worry about that question.
''Currently, the thing you've got to be sensitive to and aware of is John Lang is the coach of South Sydney. He is the only man who has the opportunity to win South Sydney their 21st premiership right now, and the club's energy and the players' energy is focused on putting in place for John everything he needs to help that happen.''
Crowe also deflected the question of whether he had held discussions with Bennett about the job. ''I don't want to talk about any of the possibilities that are out there: Mal Reilly, Brian Noble, whoever it might be because it's a pointless conversation,'' he said. ''Right now the energy of our club is focused on supporting our coach, who is John Lang.''

unfortunately at the moment it's still very much all media beat up..

bennett announced when he arrived that he was at the dragons for 3 years, and would decide after that..

no real news here for the papers to be reporting on..

bennett out of contract at the end of this season? check. knew that 3 years ago..
bunnies keen to lure bennett? check.. knew that mid last season..

its unfortunate that they do this.. just ask roosters fans how dissappointing it was to miss out on bennett because of media innuendo...

Shouldnt you be out copy-pasting some more Bunnies articles that nobody reads? tsk tsk.

Quick!! Theres an article in the Canberra Times about the Rabbits sock sponsor that needs to be posted here
Yeah nobody reads them. Yet within an hour we have two Saints fans in here commenting on it. At least Muzby was expressing an actual thought.

And for the record we are all very appreciative of NR's work.

souths will be competing to win premiership in 2011. They can do it with Lang.

2012 coach , interesting , however not waiting for 2012 to get a premiership. For 2012 , i would prefer a coach who will stick around for at least three years , no ONE Year wonders please. So if Bennett only signing for 1 year , no thanks. Prefer someone younger anyway , I would prefer Bellamy , he will have more goals to achieve.

Still Trolling a Souths site,FFS

how the f**k is it trolling when the post is directly related to the subject, providing factual information and not trying to inflame anyone?

someone tries to actually stimulate conversation on the most quiet forum on this joint and your response is simply to abuse them and call them a troll simply because they don't support the same team you do?

wake up idiot..

Mate you're lying and you know you're lying so stop acting like a troll if you don't like being called one. Have a look at the individual team forums, the Souths one would be one of the 2 or 3 most active.

f**k me dead bunniesman, you are hated everyone here, by your own kind so i don't even know why you bother showing your face back in a souths forum..

i'll continue to post comments where i like, particularly if they are on topic..

if muppets like you and NR decide to post rubbish replies and label me a troll, i'm happy to start acting like one..

no wonder all you guys ever get posted in here by other fans is just tripe.. most other team sections get a good selection of debate from non-fans.. its what makes it great..

but hey, as said, if you want me to troll, i can troll.. but that just wastes everyone's time...

Fug off to ya st merge filth.

don't stress buddy.. i'll get the telegraph to write an article about it so you can post it here...

although looking forward to seeing something written here by you that is:

  1. football related of original thought
  2. involves conversation instead of simply abusing someone who doesn't follow your team
  3. not a re-post of something else
  4. adds value to the forum
once again... i ask you and your mate bunniesman to point out exactly what about my original post is trolling?

I no longer worry about St George - just call them the Steelers as Peter Tunks does on 2SM Talkin' Sport.

Sounds about right.

They seem to disrespect Wollongong and only wear Steelers socks.

They will be forever the Steelers for mine since winning their Grand Final in 2010.

Steelers ....ouch that hurts,

Must of hurt you seeing the mighty red v lifting the premiership mate...

i dont get you South supporters, first to jump down any teams throat for "selling out", yet you play nowhere near your local crap holes and have sold out for Homebush.....then Rusty tries to buy the league, and cant even by a top 8 spot.:sarcasm:

How is Crowe "buying" the league when we have the exact same salary cap as everyone else?

And we play 30 mins away from our traditional home ground. Big f**ken deal. At least we have our whole team and not 50% of a team.

and so do we.. only lost a couple of players from last year...

you must have been thinking of melbourne.. they're pretty much 50% of the team they were last year... but surely you'd know that.. didn't you hear about GI coming to souths?

could someone please tell me what a troll or trolling is as I'm only new to the forum.

trolling is to post something deliberately inflaming someone or somthing, with the sole purpose of rousing up the forum for their own amusement..

they may start a thread designed to start a massive fight, or simply post up something controversial or deliberately argumentative, which they don't plan to discuss, but just leave there to aggrivate others..

it's not even an attempt at being funny, it's just done out of spite..

here is an example from someone in is very thread, which they have done in the roosters forum.. it's this sort of thing that people hate, and which tends to spawn retaliation, leading to a boring and annoying trolling war, which ruins the enjoyment of others..

what an article , third most , making it sound positive when highlights they are
losers considering number of TV games they had , no wonder Souths have got the flood of fridays games to start the year.
i did not see who had most viewers 1st and 2nd.
Also just need to look at membership numbers to guage real interest.
Merge is inevitable.
