Dragons spots up for grabs, says Bennett

St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett will use next month's Charity Shield showdown with South Sydney as a virtual audition for starting positions this season.

Bennett admitted the preseason battle with their old rivals would be more crucial than ever because of his commitments with the NRL All Stars team - which means he will miss the Dragons' first trial game against Parramatta in Perth.

There are a number of pieces still to fit in the Bennett jigsaw puzzle this year, following the exit of Justin Poore, the retirement of Wendell Sailor and long-term injury to Neville Costigan.
"There'll be a (Dragons) player in the indigenous team and one in the All Stars and I won't be at the game myself when we play the trial in Perth. "In the Charity Shield game we will try and get close to our best team on the field that night, we won't have a real opportunity other than the one other trial," Bennett said. Former South Sydney player Michael Greenfield is one of several props eyeing off Poore's position, along with Jarrod Saffy, last year's interchange forward Dan Hunt and ex-under-20 captain Trent Merrin.
Kiwi Jason Nightingale is favoured to win Sailor's position, with Michael Lett and recruit Peni Tagive also in the mix.
The Dragons trial in Perth is on February 14, the day after the inaugural All Star game on the Gold Coast.
Five-eighth Jamie Soward will play in the match for the indigenous team.
St George Illawarra will then play the Bulldogs in the Mercury Challenge on February 20, where the Dragons are expected to trial fringe players before the Charity Shield at ANZ Stadium on February 27.
Bennett said this season's preseason training had been easier than when he arrived at the club last year.
"When you've been at a place for a little while you feel more comfortable there and I'm certainly in that boat," he said.
"I just didn't realise what a big challenge I'd taken on until they got back this year and (I) realised how much more easy it was working with the guys after 12 months with them. "It's a lot more easy this preseason than last."

If Tagive is good enough defensively then it would free Scott up to go back into the pack but what's he like as a defender. I'm hoping to see Henry get a game in the Shield to see how he organises our attack

That's definitely going to be a concern. In his past 2 NRL games where he played Centre for the Wests Tigers he missed an average of 4.0 tackles per game while averaging 15.5 tackles, that's a tackle efficiency [tackles divided by attempted tackles] of 0.794. The NRL average of tackle efficiency for Centres is 0.870, with Chase Stanley leading* the Centres with 0.935.
*minimum 5 games played

Fair call I guess, considering he has played 39 games at Centre, 36 at Second Row throughout his NRL career, but yeah there isn’t much difference between a Centre and a Second Rower especially the way Beau Scott plays.

I think with the departure of Justin Poore and to an extent Mickey Paea, I think our forward pack has weakened a little, hence why I think Scott can move into the forward pack to help with the depth as we can cover Scott in the Centres are pretty deep in the backs department.

Scott has got to be moved into the pack.

We lacked pace in the backline on the right and Scott is not helping to improve in that area.

1.boyd [good choice for fullback or winger
2.morris
3.scott
4.cooper
5. nightingale [ fullback or winger
6.soward
7.hornby
8.hunt
9.young
10.weyman
11.prior
12.creagh
13.smith

14.tagive [i believe he can be an attacking force from the bench also can be used as a back rower. if he has good defence he should be a straight swap for beau scott
15.fien
16.greenfield
17.merrin [too much talent to stay in the 20s and can cause problems for other teams

i believe beau henry should get a start in the charity sheild and other trials if he proves himself he should get a bench spot somewhere

Our team is looking great. Michael Lett deseves a chance ahead of Tagive on the wing and Nightingale can be our versatile impact player off the bench.
Our young toyota cup players of last season may get extended runs in the trials. Are any of them capable of playing NRL besides Trent Merrin?

All players in this game should be players who are a fifty/fifty chance of making 1st grade. Why would you risk players like Soward, Morris and Weyman for a nothing game.

This game would mean more to the fringe first graders and will give them a chance to show what they've got

Without trying to derail this thread, do all pre-season articles annoy the sh*t out of anyone else?

Same thing eeeeeeeevery year.

They all need to play to build combinatons and get match fitness. We want them to be sharp in round 1, not underdone like Hornby was (he had no preseason last time and didn't find his feet until a few rounds in). Also, if we are going to give our fringe players a fair run we should be playing them alongside the better players to see how they would work in the system most likely to be employed the whole season.

I believe the team at full strength will look:

Boyd
Morris
Cooper
Scott
Nightingale
Soward
Hornby
Weyman
Young
Hunt
Prior
Creagh
Smith

Fein

Other 3 bench spots take your pick, obviously Costigan will get one when fit, the other two, prob front row spots may be rotated

Tagive and lett will have to wait for their chances, just like Morris did last year, hopefully they will shine when given a chance in the origin period

BTW...OT

Moz should b a shoe in for origin, does that mean if coopers form warrants it he might get a call up, ghey selectors seem to love the club combo...

i think it would be very interesting to see if Cooper fires and JMoz doesn't what they do come origin time!!!

Dragon wannabes: Five chasing shot at prop

A party of props previously on the periphery will put their hands up to replace Justin Poore when the Dragons tackle preseason premiership picks Parramatta in Perth.

St George Illawarra's first trial is on February 14 and Michael Greenfield, Junior Paulo, Trent Merrin, Dan Hunt and Jarrod Saffy will be vying to fill the front row vacancy left by the NSW and Country Origin representative's departure.

Fellow Blue Michael Weyman has a mortgage on one bookend spot but the ME Bank Stadium stoush will have a big say on which hopeful gets first crack at a starting role in 2010.
And they get to do so against none other than Poore, who will be making his debut for the bookmakers' competition favourites after a breakthrough season last year.

Greenfield and Paulo are new faces, Merrin was a National Youth Cup prop of the year, while Hunt and Saffy are backing up from good 2009 campaigns.

Meantime, the cross-country trip will also be a pointer to who will assume Wendell Sailor's position on the wing.

The recently retired dual international anointed Kiwi Jason Nightingale as heir apparent, but NYC graduate Joe Vickery, Michael Lett and off-season recruit Peni Tagive will also be keen to show their wares.

If Nightingale is handed the No 5 jersey, Vickery, Lett and Tagive will be in the running to assume Matt Cooper's place in the centres.

Cooper - along with master coach Wayne Bennett and five-eighth Jamie Soward - will be on the Gold Coast for the inaugural All Stars match on February 13.

The Shellharbour junior edged second-rower Ben Creagh in an online fans poll to be St George Illawarra's representative in the Bennett-coached NRL All Stars, who will take on Soward, Sailor and the other Indigenous All Stars.
Soward made the Dragons pivot spot his own last year, meaning the 2009 minor premiers will have to come up with a stop-gap No 6 for the Perth clash.

Utility Nathan Fien or boom youngster Beau Henry could partner skipper Ben Hornby in the halves in a dress rehearsal for the round-one visit to Parramatta on March 12.

St George Illawarra's brains trust will also have to find a replacement for Queensland Origin representative Neville Costigan, who will miss the first month of the NRL season after having a shoulder reconstruction late last year.

The Dragons have ample time to fit the final pieces to what they hope will be the premiership puzzle as they play the Bulldogs in the Mercury Challenge at WIN Stadium on February 20.

The annual Charity Shield clash against South Sydney is scheduled a week later.
