Dureau targets long-term reign
ROBERT DILLON

ROOKIE halfback Scott Dureau is poised to re-sign with the Newcastle Knights for two more years and plans to establish himself in that time as Andrew Johns's long-term successor.

Dureau's manager, David Riolo, said yesterday he was well advanced in negotiations with the Knights and expected a deal would be struck within the next few days.

Knights officials were similarly optimistic that an agreement was imminent.

"I'm pretty confident he'll stay, and hopefully we'll have something sorted out by the end of the week," Riolo said.

"There was a little bit of interest [from other clubs] but he's not really looking at it.

"He wanted to stay in Newcastle.

"Unless that fell down, we wouldn't even look elsewhere."

Dureau, who made his NRL debut last season and has played in six top-grade games this year, said yesterday that re-signing with the Knights would cap off "a big 12 months for me".

"Hopefully we can get something sorted out, sooner rather than later," he said.

"It will be nice to get it out of the way and know what I'm doing for the next couple of years.

"Then I can just concentrate on footy."

Newcastle have used four halfbacks Luke Walsh, Jarrod Mullen, Kurt Gidley and Dureau since Johns retired 13 months ago, and Dureau declared he wants to consolidate himself as first receiver.

"That's my goal to make that No.7 jersey my own," he said. "If I can do that, that'd be good."

Retaining 21-year-old Dureau has become a priority for Newcastle after five-eighth Chris Bailey announced last week that he was joining Manly next year.

Bailey's exit has increased pressure on the Knights to shore up their playmaking options, but coach Brian Smith said last night that re-signing Dureau would ensure there is plenty of depth around the scrumbase.

"We'll have three of them [Mullen, Walsh and Dureau] there in those halves spots, and also we've got Kurt [Gidley] there as well, who can do it at a pinch.

"We'd be pretty confident about our depth around the halves with those four guys there.

"We had to make up our minds a bit with Bails and Scotty Dureau, and it was a tough call."

Smith denied that Bailey's decision had prompted the Knights to fast-track discussions with Dureau.

"Scotty was always in our plans," Smith said. "We've been negotiating with his manager for a couple of months."

The loss of Bailey and the likely retention of Dureau indicates that Mullen will be able to settle into his preferred position of five-eighth.

But the presence of Walsh, who has been stuck in Newcastle's NSW Cup (reserve-grade) team after playing 13 NRL games last season, should keep Dureau honest.

"He's a good player, and he'll bounce back," Dureau said of Walsh.

"A little bit of competition is always good."

Dureau, who has been chosen in the starting line-up at Bailey's expense for Saturday's clash with the Warriors, has proven himself this season as a natural ball-player with a smart kicking game.

Smith had no doubt his best football was ahead of him.

"Scotty's made a heap of improvement, and we think he's still got plenty to go," Smith said.

"The consistency factor, and doing it over and over again, is a big thing. But he's certainly done all that we've asked of him this season, and he's lapped it up."

Meanwhile, the Knights have kicked off negotiations with the manager of prop Jesse Royal and winger Akuila Uate, who are both off contract at season's end.

Royal, 28, has been a mainstay of Newcastle's pack this season, appearing in all nine games.

Uate is yet to make his top-grade debut, but the 20-year-old Fijian is rated a future sensation by many sound judges.

I thought maybe a 3 year contract.

Hope we get Royal before he gets to many options.

Good to see we will at least offer Aku something, Really hope he can stay.

It's funny...since Smith's been here, we've been keeping the players we want to keep, and getting rid of those we don't, and since Hagan went to Parra it's been the opposite

Royal probably won't get too many offers because he is 28, but like all late starters he still has a lot of footy in him i think.
I know a guy who played at the top level in the 60's who always tells me your body is good for 10 years at the top grade whatever age you start at - so Royal started at 23 and has 5 more years in him by that logic.
We won't get anyone else as good for the same money he will want.

As to Dureau - i'm very pleased, and i'm even pleased we still have Walshy who i can see putting on real pressure next season. If Mullo has rep duty next year i'd love to see Walsh/Dureau get back together.

I watched that one game that was up on the leaguetv right. Walshy looked like he was taking control of the game well, but his long kicking was horrendous per usual. Uate looked dangerous everytime he got the ball to, like the whole two times whatever it was, definately needs to get more ball. Sau looked big and strong, didnt really see anyone else that was a standout for me. Would love to see both Sau and Uate make it into FG even this week.

Hopefully Uate stays, but wouldnt be suprised to see him go elsewhere if a club can promise him a first grade chance.

Although in our favour we can say MacDougall is retiring and that will push McManus to centre and allow Uate first chance at a wing position.

Awesome news, would have liked to keep Bailey also but we can't have everything. I guess that means if they are trying to sign Uate and Royal than we have done our recruiting and retention for this year. I think Smith plans to blood a young gun.

Our PL side has gone to sh*t - and the sort of form they showed in that game will get us the wooden spoon - but guys like Gordon, Tuafua and a few others improve the hell out of the side.
The one thing Walshy showed in that game was that he still has his speed, or rather he has got his speed back after his leg injuries, with that run away try.

In all honesty, is Aku going well enough to warrant First Grade selection? I haven't seen him play, but I also haven't seen too much comment on here demanding his selection in First Grade either...

Just asking is all.

As for Dureau, I'd be reviewing his management if he signed for any more than 2 years at this stage. This is the contract that will make or break him - all going well she should be able to command big dollars in a few years time. He'd be crazy to sign a longer contract at this stage given he is looking the goods.

Maybe people are more excited about the idea of Uate. I suppose he's not playing poorly, and he'd probably kill it in first grade if handed the chance, but for mine he definitely hasn't earned it through performance.

Completely off topic and random.. only cos someone brought up Hages

I had a really bad dream last night... Smith retired as coach at the end of 09 and Hagan returned as head coach in 2010..

Hagan let go Kurt and Steve as he wanted to bring over Daniel Wagon and Justin Ryder... we played the Roosters in Rd 1 and got belted 46-8 at Newcastle. After the game .. Hagan did a lap of honour on a float that said "Supercoach" ....

The Crusade jumped the fence and set the float on fire and the crowd jumped the fence and belted Hagan!! The Grannies were hitting him with their purses and kicking him with their slippers! Hagan quit the next day and we had a new coach.....

YOSH!

He got rid of Wes and Keith cos they "arent really good" .. he put Aku in the top grade and tried to get Perry to come back...He was well known as the coach with the most outlandish statements such as .. "McManus/Uate will be the next Gidley/Tahu and will play for the Blues! Also Vuna/Uate are the new Sailor/Tuquiri.

Then I woke up as soon as Perry and Yosh were shaking hands on a new deal ...

Random I know lol
