DUTCH RUGBY LEAGUE PLAN BIG YEAR

1st April 2014
The Nederlandse Rugby League Bond, which has been granted Observer status of the RLEF since February 2012, is targeting 2014 as the year in which it will significantly develop rugby league in the Low Countries. The six-strong board of directors has, to date, focused on ensuring a sustainable foundation based on good governance and has now set itself a series of short- and long-term objectives.

Principal among those is the creation of four rugby league clubs, officially registered under Dutch law, and fielding them in a 9s competition later this year, as a precursor to a full 13-a-side championship which has so far never been attempted in Holland. President Timo Meinders, who took over last year from the pioneering Jason Bruygoms– now NRLB development manager – is also leading the project to have NRLB accepted by the national sports authority, the Nederlandse Olympisch Comité-Nederlandse Sport Federatie(NOCNSF).

“The goals of 2014 will help us achieve the long term result,” said Meinders. “Building the house with bricks, stone by stone. The NRLB and rugby league players are doing this with pride, passion and love for the sport.”

NRLB is also mentoring the younger Belgian association in its own technical development, in partnership with the Federation Française de Rugby à Paris Treize. The tripartite project begins in Delft this week, with seven Belgian coach and match official tutors joining leading French personnel Thierry Alibert and Thierry Dumaine as well as RLEF staff.

Europe has by far the most potential for a 9s comp featuring a whole swath of nations, up to 20 teams, the majority of which are in the Schengen zone and linked with reasonably cheap transport. Please make it happen RLEF, would be awesome.

Rotterdam level Dutch Rugby League derby series

Game two of the NRLB Nationale Kampioenschap at Delft Rugby Club saw Rotterdam City Pitbulls emerge victorious, 30-20, over Amsterdam City Cobras in another thrilling encounter to level the series.
The game was in doubt until the closing stages, Pitbulls skipper Jorge Vazquez outstanding and big Amsterdam prop Kirby McKean their best along with Patrick Ufkes.
Rotterdam’s newest player Edson Neves, who comes from a Basketball background, scored a try on debut in his first ever rugby league match, Cobras’ Roel van Rossum doing likewise.
Pitbulls coach Jason Bruygoms said: “In game one we lacked structure especially as we really missed our two pivots Marvin Slingerland and Uri Breman. Their return made the difference as they directed the play. I am really proud of the boys and it’s a nice way to finish the season with one game each. I guess we have to wait till 2015 to see who is the better team.”
Opposite number Daan van Rossum commented: “After our victory in Amsterdam I really felt like we could take the series so I'm disappointed we lost the game but respect to the Pitbulls, they played a really tough but fair game. The matches have definitely moved the sport forward here.”
After the game, the end of season prize giving saw Rotterdam’s Jededaih Timisela receive the 2014 Player of the Year award and Cobra’s Floris Steenland take the Rookie of the Year prize.

A decider definitely makes sense. I don't know if there are any plans in place for a 3rd team, but if there are, it would be the perfect place to hold the decider. A neutral city, where they intend to start a future team....

As Rob said though, it is a start at least....

Great to see the Dutch and Belgian RL's collaborate for a joint comp. Hopefully a start of something big for the future.

Following a meeting in Brussels between leaders of the Belgian Rugby League Association and the Nederlandse Rugby League Bond, a four-club competition has been confirmed for next spring.
Amsterdam Cobras RLFC, Rotterdam Pitbulls RLFC, Den Haag Knights and North Brussels Gorillas will play a round of games in each of the cities before a finals day in Brussels.
Jason Bruygoms, NRLB’s Director of Development, said: “It is amazing that such a project has taken shape. It helps put down very strong roots in the region."
Gorillas president, Marco Morasci added: "I am amazed by the growth of the game and by this initiative. The potential is there and it's a new story in Dutch and Belgian rugby league history."
NRLB match officials manager Misaele Vakadranu will lead on match appointments, with local referees assuming control of all the fixtures.
The competing clubs will meet in Roosendal in February for a tournament briefing

More good news to come out of the Netherlands.

RUGBY LEAGUE TO BE PLAYED IN NETHERLANDS SCHOOLS

23rd January 2015
The Netherlands Rugby League Bond has announced the creation of their first-ever schools rugby league programme. It aims to engage participants from the ages of 6 to 18 and, to begin with, the sessions will be delivered by national head coach, Kane Krlic. The first block has already started at Bredeschool Stadsdennen Harderwijk.

Schools Sport Co-Ordinator Gert-Jan Hop said it was a great success. “We are very excited to be the first cluster of schools in the Netherlands to play rugby league,” he said. "After just two sessions the pupils are already asking for more! We want to support the NRLB in developing the game in this area.”

Plans are already in place to include more primary and high schools together with colleges in the surrounding areas. Netherlands Rugby League Bond president Timo Meinders said, “We are very excited to create this programme. We feel it will aid our development and will also allow more people in the Netherlands to become aware of the sport. We understand that to get the programme to where we want it to be will be a long but exciting process.”

He continued, “2015 is going to be an exciting year in the Netherlands for rugby league which wll also see the first ever cross-border domestic competition with Belgium starting, a list of international fixtures and an elite programme for our international players.”
