Kimmorley to have first hit-out

February 14, 2005

The halves pairing Cronulla fans hope will catapult the NRL club into premiership contention will have its first airing in north Queensland on Saturday night.

Adam Dykes and Brett Kimmorley have been named alongside David Peachey and Jason Stevens in a full-strength Sharks side to play the Cowboys in a trial in Mackay.

Dykes, who rejoined Cronulla this season following three indifferent years at Parramatta, is relishing his return to the Shire and itching to test his combination with Kimmorley.

"I'm loving it, it's unreal," he said.

"I feel like a different person. The whole off-season has been great.

"He (Kimmorley) wasn't going to play but he wanted to have a run."

So how exactly will the new-look combination work?

"He's a dominant player and I like the ball too," he said.

"We have been working really well. If I want the ball he gets it to me and vice versa."

Sharks coach Stuart Raper also named Stevens and Nigel Vagana in an extended 23-man squad after the pair missed last weekend's trial win over Parramatta.

Dykes' fellow recruits Luke Covell, Paul Mellor and Hutch Maiava will also play.

North Queensland is expected to reciprocate by selecting its best available outfit, setting up an intriguing contest.

"They'll be in good shape," Dykes said.

"I'm looking forward to it, just putting the jersey back on. I'm really excited about it. I'm dying to have a game.

"The off-season training has been great. All the boys are bigger and faster."

Dykes played 129 games for the Sharks before leaving the club to take up a lucrative deal with the Eels.

His time at Parramatta was blighted by injury and he rarely showed glimpses of his undoubted talent.

But Dykes and Cronulla are hoping his injury problems are a thing of the past.

"I feel a lot faster," he said.

"I've been doing two to three sessions a week, I feel really fast on my feet.

"I used to drive an hour and a half to training (at Parramatta)and think nothing of it.

"Now it's two minutes to training. It makes a massive different to your body."

"I used to drive an hour and a half to training (at Parramatta)and think nothing of it.

Sounds like he drives around like he runs on the footy field. Lots of round and round without too much forward and twice as long to get there as he should.

Maybe Mc S but he does say to training, not there and back.

And I'll agree to buy you a beer for every MOM, so long as you buy one for me for every kick out on the full, penalty kick failing to find touch and long term injury.

So you think BK will continue in this vane?

Hey hey hey, I am only talking about Dykes with PJ, but I'll buy you a beer Reefy if Noddy does it. U can get one for me for every MOM performance he puts in.

We'll see plenty of tries this season as long as Dykse stays injury free. His confidence is up so he expects to be playing 1st grade all season and stay on the field. He's excited and I'm excited.
