Dylan Brown is overrated

Ryles made a comment in one article that he doesn't think Brown has played his last match for the Eels, but isn't sure what that game might look like (or similar).

I'm kind of perversely hoping that Ryles gives the "missing in action" crew - Matterson, Lane and Brown - all a farewell match in the final round. One last time for BA's boys who couldn't find the professional motivation this year to give their all and play at their potential for the sake of the team?
And we win by 50

As its behind a paywall, the highlights of the article:

- Says Brown, in 14 NRL games at five eight this season has 6 line breaks, 7 line break assists and 7 try assists. Compares with Katoa who has 18 line break assists with 19 try assists and Kodi Nikorima with 10 line breaks. Note that in only 3 games this season, Sam Walker has 9 try assists.
- Brown is ranked 27th for line engagements with 55. He's on par with Cody Walker who has the same number in only 8 games this season. By comparison the top players are Katoa with 202, Dearden with 131, Hynes with 124 and even Luke Brooks with 109.
- States how much better the side has looked since Brown was left out of the squad.
- Notes the benefits to the Eels of the experience being gained by Papalii and Hawkins.

I think this quote though is poignant though -

"Having a player, especially one as overhyped and perennially disappointing as Brown, hanging around until he gets overpaid elsewhere is no good for anyone."

Was he always over rated? I don't think so. Something really happened to him in 2025.
I disagree. I think he's always been overrated. Not saying he's never been good; but always overrated. He's a guy who always looked like he had massive potential, but never really delivered. Speed was overrated. Kicking game. Passing game. All of it, except his defence - which is elite. He has just reached his real potential and plateaued out. He won't get better than he is now.
Not a bad player - but never great.

His biggest issue is his mind is what is stopping him from being elite. If he had half the work ethics as cronk, cleary, et al, he would become elite but he's more like, ho hum.. lets dance.

Clearly we all will never agree about Dylan, but there are not many I would think agree with his non-selection this week. I get that Bailey or his manager has had a chat and that has been the catalyst to his Cup pick, but this week the team did not need a backrower with limited upside to play centre. If Ryles picked Araz or Penisini2, then I get it. Don't get this.

It all depends whether the release request was made before or after the team for Sunday was selected.

Big difference. If it was before I’m with Ryles. If it was after I don’t get the coach’s thinking but I still think Bailey is a sook and responded poorly.

I think it's a bit premature to be even thinking someone is a sook. For all you know the club might have started the conversation about his --> 2027 contract.

Well, if we are giving out NRL experience to guys in the future and the future is now, then Samrani's pick is justified.

He is our Marata - half edge, half centre and obviously Ryles sees something in him or he is a gr8 trainer so have to give him experience NOW.

Say come next year, we haven't picked up a centre and Bailey has left and Will or Russell get's suspended, Samrani will fill the centre role.

So it's March 2026 but NOW.

Or do you prefer Lomax at centre and Tago or Dunster on the wing?

I agree Samrani is a useful utility, however he is no Marata. Nobody should seriously consider Samrani to be in our top 20 players, if all fit next year. If he is, we remain in bad shape IMO.

You are being cheeky by mentioning Temu Tago and Dunster and omitting Brown, Simmonson, Araz or Penisini2.

In the other thread, was told Tago and Dunster aren't signed for next year. Brown and possible Simmonson either.

So yes, we could've played Dick2, probably not Araz but I am thinking JR has Samrani on the edge of NRL which is closer than Dick2

f**k you’re a pain in the arse. I gave you the two likely scenarios. You made up a third because you’re just being your usual self. Let’s see how it plays out shall we?

You're a pain in the arse too. Bailey asks for a release and you start painting scenarios that he's a sook. Why ? Cos you love stirring shit up.

I’m promoting dialogue on a live subject which is what forums are for. You are waiting for another jiz infused protein shake from @Gary Gutful.
