Eduardo charged by Uefa for diving

Friday, 28 August 2009

Uefa today charged Arsenal striker Eduardo with diving to win a penalty against Celtic and he could now face missing the Gunners' first two Champions League group games.

European football's governing body announced they had opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatia international for "deceiving the referee" in Wednesday night's play-off round second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Uefa said in a statement: "Having studied video evidence of the incident in question, the Uefa disciplinary inspector decided to charge the player concerned. The Uefa control and disciplinary body will examine the case on September 1."

If Eduardo is suspended he would miss Standard Liege away on September 16 and the home match with Olympiacos on September 29. Eduardo fell as Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc came sliding out and scored from the resulting penalty.
Afterwards, Scottish FA chief executive Gordon Smith called for the striker to be sanctioned by Uefa.

Smith said: "Eduardo is a terrific player who has battled back from a serious injury to resume playing at the highest level.

"However, last night he showed disrespect to the game by his actions in winning a penalty against Celtic."

Eduardo suffered a serious broken leg two seasons ago and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said the striker was taking evasive action.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: "I think that if you have had an injury like that it's fairly natural that you might want to avoid significant contact."

The behavior of the Celtic keeper, although understandably angry, wasn't much better

The most annoying aspect of this whole issue for me was listening to Arse Whinger on Fox this morning saying this is a disgrace because from now on every decision by every referee could now be challenged by UEFA.

Decisions like this should be acted upon imo.

Is this clown actually condoning what Eduardo did, is this how he coaches his players ?

If this were my team, I would be very disappointed in not only the player but the manager.

ok, so.... Why didn't Babel get done for his dive in the box in the UCL years ago?
What a joke.... (I hate diving)

I dont mind them charging Eddy but as has been said, what about Babels dive and numerous others that have been left untouched, they need to be consistent.

I agree, they need to be consistent and hopefully this action will deter it

I like the initiative although the only problem i have is about the grey area between a player legitimately going for a dive (like Eduardo) and a player who legitimately slips or falls over, an was not actually attempting to con the ref.

Also i am assuming these charges will only come against players who have their play-acting rewarded for in-game. For example if Eduardo doesn't get the penalty, he's not under any scrutiny from Uefa?

A lucky deflection of Gallas' arse, a cruel own goal and some blatant cheating puts Celtic into the Europa League.

Obviously they might've gone on and won at the Emirates anyway, but that penalty killed any momentum we might have had.

That and Arsenal were so much better than you.

He'd be facibg a two match ban for that dive in the A-League.

Of course, it is a bit out of proportion when you think, if the officials on field felt it a dive and gave him a yellow - it would be done and dusted - considered dealt with.

Players who legitimately fall over generally don't throw their arms in the air and turn towards the referee shouting mid-fall.
