Another thing that shows what a shambles of a club we've become is that current players are talking in the media about who they want as coach, before an appointment is made. I know these guys are Gen Y, but no-one gets to choose your own boss...

As an employee you just shut up, wait for the decision, and then do your best under whoever is recruited for the role. But then doing their best for the coach is something our current players have not been good at at all in recent times.

You don't choose your boss but you do choose who you respect.

It's no coincidence that both grand final coaches were known by their respective playing groups before they were appointed.

Well surely it comes down to appointing a coach who can instil that respect in the playing squad, whether they are previously known or not? Kearney and Stuart couldn't do it with our current/recent bunch of peahearts... good luck to whoever is next.

I still think players should not be quoted in the media (or social media) about these matters before decisions are made. It's out of line, simple as that.

Well yes, the chance to be at a club that looks more likely for a top 4 finish in the next couple of years, than the club that has finished 15th, 16th and 16th in the last three seasons, and starting from scratch again.

Actually we finished 13th in 2011. ;-)

And we aren't starting from scratch next year. We finally have some high quality young (i.e. cheap) depth players at the club next year. That means we can cover well for injuries through the season, and more importantly, we can make big moves in the player market next year.

I agree the players would be better off keeping their opinions private but they are young, stupid, uneducated, rich, famous, and all have smart phones and Twitter accounts.

But certainly ours would be the worst of the lot. They've been driving coaches out of our club since 2008. They're used to it.

f**king hope so.

I'm sure Jason Taylor is the smartest candidate, and understands both the tactical and strategic sides of coaching. He would probably make a director of football redundant.

But a big part of being the head coach is man management and filling the role of a figurehead. I'm not confident in Taylor in this regard.

He may be, it's not like the Souths players hated him. They liked him enough to go out drinking with him....

Actually I think it was 14th - I'd forgotten the last ditch win catapulted us up the table a bit (but surely not as far as 13th)?

I think we are essentially starting from scratch in terms of having no confidence, no momentum and no continuity to call upon. I think the club has always had healthy depth in our junior players, though there were a couple that debuted this season I think will go on to be quite special in say five years time (Kelepi, Peni).

Wow, when checking that ladder position I also looked up 2012.... I hadn't realised that for the whole of season 2013 we were running last, except for round 1 (where we were equal last but must've had a better for and against). With a record like that Kearney simply had to go, no two ways about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_NRL_season#Ladder_progression

At least in 2013 we went 12 rounds before we landed on the bottom of the table for the remainder of the season, which in fairness probably earnt Stuart a second season (or would have, if he wasn't signed to a contract with more holes than a sieve).

so half the board wants arthur as coach and the others want taylor?
the solution is pretty simple jt coaching director, arthur head coach
done and done

But we actually won fewer games in 2013...not saying I would have sacked Captain f**kstick....but the point in the season at which you first hit the bottom of the ladder isn't the only consideration.

In 2012 our first win was in Round 5...so our ladder position shouldn't be that surprising.

I didn't know Taylor was so disliked!!! This will teach Sharpe a big lesson. He could of gone about this a different way privately and got Arthur. DOPE!!!

Jason Taylor created history on 2 fronts. First coach to ever get a team into the semis after being appointed mid year and the Souths semi appearance after many years in the wilderness. He also is credited with contributing to the Roosters Premiership. We will be fine. Now for Smithy as GM of football and we are set. Any player who doesn't like it can f**k off with this newly acquired spoon.
