Eels discuss their season over pizzas
June 1, 2004

Parramatta players last night regrouped at Nathan Hindmarsh's home in a bid to salvage the wreck that their season has become, writes Brad Walter.

The Parramatta players threw in $10 each, Nathan Hindmarsh rang for pizzas and beer and then it was down to business.

"It was all of the senior squad," Eels skipper Daniel Wagon said. "We just wanted to get together and discuss the way we've been going. There's no dramas."

Not internally anyway, but the fans aren't happy and are planning a rally at their next home game, against Manly on June 13, to increase the pressure on the club to sack coach Brian Smith.

The players are feeling the pressure, too, having been booed from Parramatta Stadium after their 37-6 thrashing by the Dragons a fortnight ago. Some supporters even took off their Eels jerseys and threw them onto the field.

The meeting at Hindmarsh's house last night was organised to find a way to prevent the side's losing streak extending to six successive games in Newcastle this weekend.

"They're a bit harsh," said Hindmarsh. "It doesn't feel good when you're getting booed by your own supporters. I'd like to see them . . . do a better job."

Former Test prop Michael Vella disagrees.

"They would probably say get in the stands and support the way they do, and they would see that we're not as passionate as they are," Vella said.

Not that Vella and his teammates don't care about the way the Eels are performing. They just don't have all the answers to explain the club's dramatic slide from being the best team in the NRL in 2001, albeit losers to the Knights in the premiership decider, to also-rans last season.

"We've had a lot of injuries, that's contributed to it as well as the loss of key players," Hindmarsh said. "With the salary cap the way it is it's hard to keep those players. We would have liked to have kept them but in the end they become that good it's hard to afford them. [For the players], it's a job and puts food on the table so you've got to go where the grass is greener."

Whatever other reasons there are, the players are adamant that Smith is not to blame.

"We've got faith in Brian, we know he's not going anywhere and we want to stay together and work on it," Vella said. "In the years leading up to 2001 after Brian took over we always made the semis and made the grand final, but since then we've either just made it to the first week of the semis or not made it at all.

"We're in a bit of a hole at the moment and everyone's trying to dig their way out. The players want to work out of that hole and do the tough times; the players don't want to walk away from tough times.

"Something has got to give but it definitely won't be the coaching staff, I know that. The players are 100 per cent behind Brian so in the end we might have to drop a few or bring a few up . . . try new things."

To confirm their belief, the senior players asked whether any of their teammates had any problems or concerns they wanted to air at the meeting. Wagon said just two complaints had arisen. "Hindy was too tight to put his hand in his pocket and Vella ate all the pizza," he said.

Again the Training and Media Savvy of this club shows through

What this says to me is Wags got a call from the reporter last night after the meeting, and said well did you guys identify weaknesses in each other and that would have been a reply that is not only funny, but loyal to the club and those in the meeting but not disclosing what was discussed.

At least they are giving it ther best to try and get out of the hole

I'm not sure that beer and pizzas will provide the spark

Perhaps they should have been given $1000 each and gone to the Cross.

Micky V you are a champion. A thinker - a person who knows whats going on.

I can't stomach this attitude of Wagons/Hindmarshes that the fans are slack. Its the players and the coach who are not putting in. maybe they are right. Maybe Smith is coming up with the game plans.

If that's the case, then scak the lot of 'em, apart from Mick Vella, who at least understands that fans are passionate about the team, and want top see them do well.

As for Hindy, no player has had more praise from the fans than he. Sounds like it means sweet FA to him.

I don't know.

I understans why it hurts him that people boo the team. I mean, no offence to the team, but I think when they were booed, it didn't reflect on Hindy and one or two other players.

Still, I personally don't believe it's the way to go. I DO think they're trying hard, but they are very, VERY down in confident.

Just look at Burt - at the start of the season, he was on fire. Agility, pace, hole-running - he did it all.

Then he got hit a few huge tackles, adn we began losing, and his form has dropped.

Same with Dykes.

And then there are players like Micky V, who try hard but are made to look worse than they actually played.

Anyway, I don't care.

If they are trying to fix it, and they genuinely believe they can, I for one will be there SUPPORTING them.

The reason Hindy sounds a bit pissed off is because he is trying his backside off every game only to be booed off the field.
After 40 tackles and 15 hitups I am sure he gets a bit shirty.
I think that Vella hit the nail on the head though.. It can be frustrating being a loyal and passionate fan and sometimes when you see some of the players having a ordinary game, you tend to feel as though the eels jersey means more to you than some of the players.

Well at least they are working to solve the problem. Smith appears like he can't help, so it's a good step by the players to try and find out for themselves. I can understand Hindy's feelings, he gives 100% every week and is greeted by boos as he leaves the field. What he should remember though is it's us fans that are paying his and the others players wages. Hopefully this is a step up.

Also don't forget Hindmarsh was in the stands for that Dragons game because he was playing Origin. So he knows exactly what it would of looked like from a supporters pint of view.

its good that mick V knows where the fans are coming from, it means more of them might understand.
but i also hope that the boys know there are some fans, a small minority in a big crowd, but some none theless, that will NEVER boo them

hopefully Hindy know who to exclude in those comments, but keep showing your general support, and the boys will know we're all still behind em!

Booing any team or player for mine is pure poor sportsmanship and a low act and to boo ones own side is the lowest. That is my opinion and I will stick with it.

I actually never boo any team, even the opposition.

I have been heavily criticised, even by family and friends, as they say it's just a bit of fun booing the opponents.

But I always clap the opposition, and cheer for the Eels.

The only people I boo are the touchies and refs when they make an awful call (*cough*Sharks game*cough*).
