Come on the Kiwis aren't that desperate. Why do they even bother naming such a large squad? Naming 3 Eels Premier League players is just trivial anyway, they aren't going to get a run.

The NZ Team play a lot of games

Not only the Tri Nations which is about 6 games but they are alway playing a few extra games including one against a NZ "A" Side but with 40 players already named in that sqaud you'd think either that the other team will come from players named or at very least that the likes of Maruc,s, Smith, Lewis and Covell were named to play in that game for the main NZ Team
