I always reckon that in 2001 and 2009 the nerves got us and if the game went on for another 15 mins, we would've won them both
IMO a combination of early match nerves and the Johns/Kennedy masterclass killed us, but more the latter than former. The Knights were entitled to ease up with a 24 point halftime lead.

2009 I think wasn't so much nerves as much as game plan. We were obsessed in the 1st half with kicking to Steve Turner's wing, but he passed every test. Then second half we explored the other side and we scored a couple down their left but all too late...

2001 knights were just too good and underrated leading into the GF…

in 2009 The bulllshit penalty for slater dropping the ball cost us. We were coming for them, and that turned the game / momentum….reckon we win if we got the ball then….

However 2005 was our best chance……..we blew it that year !!

And then Smithy tried to adopt to it and we missed the finals in 2003/04. However he got it right by 2005 with the emergence of Tim Smith. In my opinion that 05 side was the best team we had since our last premiership winning team.
We should have had more than enough to beat an average Cowboys side but losing Hindmarsh for the season and Fui getting suspended really screwed us.

Very talented side, but like so many talented Eels sides it lacked an experienced head in the spine.

I remember we made a ton of handling errors in that game. Jason Moodie i swear had 5 alone.

Just something about BS teams, they fell over hard in the big moments.

You forget all the great and scintillating moments the kid has had in his short career. In that way he reminds me a little of Brad Fitler in his early days. Would do nothing for most of the game and then out of nowhere would blow the game apart, then go back to sleep again.

Not saying he is the next Freddy, but lets hope he progresses in the same vain and turns into a more consistent player overall. I still think he needs to work harder on his passing quality, when to run to the line and draw and pass just before he hits the defender and his long kicking game. But there were some good signs late in the season last year. Pity we don't have a Gus Gould to mentor him to take the next step like Freddy did.

I will wait and see how we bring this obviously talented kid along. He is one of those that can go either way. Top 5 in the game or just an ok player that occasionally does really good things like we saw in the highlights reel. I hope we can turn him into the player he could be if he reached his full and consistent potential. He is very laid back just like Freddy was who needed the right type of prodding and tutelage for him to find that most important thing called consistency. We will see.

Freddie was lucky to have Gus, does Dyl have that sort of mentor??? Time will tell.

I re watched the Pennys V Eels semi last night. Gee Dyl had a great game. Others who stood out massively were RCG, Marata, Mitch, Gutho, Matto and Junior. Even Carty was strong when he got his chance. Ice was ok but not the inpact like earlier in the season. A few terrible referee involvements, Dill Smiths brain explosions, Dill Smith at center to replace Waqa, Nrowns error and obviously carrying injury and Stones D/H service cost us greatly. It was there to win. Its fair to say the better team lost but The Pennys didnt have a Dill Smith or Stones dodgy service to contend with either. Drown took so many first passes off the ruck and his defence. Fu*ken WOW! Although he treads a fine line, Marata, particularly on the edge, will be missed in 2023. He is so tough. Dill and Stone not at all. Drown should be re signed now. Get negotiating MON.
