I guess we could have played Stone at hooker that game (which Gazza would’ve agreed was the best choice at time), started Rodwell maybe at lock and brought ummm… ummm… ummm…. kindly asked the NRL for dispensation to play an unregistered player because all our other players were either injured or were being rested because we didn’t want them to get injured.
And then we risk Stone getting injured in that game, Lussick getting injured at training and we’re left with Billy Smith to play 80 at hooker, occasionally spelled by Gutho (which Gazza would’ve admitted was the best choice at the time).
Injuries happen.
Maybe we rushed Mahoney back and he got reinjured, or maybe we keep him in cotton wool and he gets reinjured mid finals game.

Like a few people have said, we were stretched for players.
Besides, it’s just unlucky. You can’t always rest blokes just in case. Maybe he was under done? He hadn’t played a heap of FG that year. Every appearance might have done him good. There was no reserve grade.
