Btw did anyone notice that channel 9 must not have a raiders mini ball.

It was generic NRL one with raiders written on it with black texta.

Probably explains why raiders dont get much FTA action.

Thats cos the raiders are so popular that their balls are sold out

Good to see him acknowledge that the power game alone isn’t enough and that sometimes you have to do more. Looking forward to seeing what solutions they’ve come up with during this season.
A welcome antidote to all of the times that BA has said a power game alone is enough.

i thought it was interesting when he said shifting the ball to the edges before you earn the right

i feel like manly did us well when they flogged us last year in terms of going right for the edges

It’s amazing how we do every single thing right (recruitment, retention, gameplans) every year yet still haven’t been able to make it past week 2 of the finals since 2009.
I don't think we've had anything close to the best recruitment/retention since about 2005. But we were absolutely able to win in week two for the past couple of years. Just because you lose a game doesn't mean you were 0% chance of winning.

It's a fair criticism given that 99% of his comments for years have been about effort and completions and attitude.
Effort and attitude are two areas where you're most able to improve a player, so it makes sense that he would focus there, especially in public messaging. As for completions, between 2014 and 2018 Arthur had us play a risky low-percentage style (which suited our roster) and his messaging was all about be-prepared-to-defend-your-mistakes. 2018 changed all that and afterwards it became don't-make-mistakes. It certainly puts a lot less pressure on your defence when you hold the ball.

I know you’re trying to say that we play a game style that is contingent on the type of roster we have at the time. I disagree with you on how you seem to be implying that we couldn’t have done better at times and the coaching staff got it right every time. The fact that Steve Murphy mentioned that the power game alone isn’t always enough shows that there is an acknowledgment that we didn’t use the ball enough at times last season and just tried to brute force our way over the try line. It can only be a good thing if the coaching staff acknowledges what areas we fell short in last season and tries to come up with ways to rectify it.

He also said we have been working on increasing ball movement for years, and that the test will come when there's two points on the line. You have to remember that every player that runs out on the field is still the one who needs to decide whether it's the right time to pass or not. If he thinks the risk of a turnover is too high he'll hold the ball. You might've noticed we can concede big scores when possession goes against us. Our team isn't built for defending repeat sets. Some of our best players aren't especially good defenders, which is one of the reasons they haven't played much Origin.

I recall plenty of comments about being prepared to defend your mistakes, which came after a loss. But did we actually play a riskier game?
