Mentioned a few times here, Ryles was a "dopey" player, so they don't want him....yet 2 of smartest coaches of the last 30 years...Smith (who plenty have said they want back involved with the eels) and Bellamy (enough said) activity recruited him as a player........

While Robinson and Jones (both with reputations of being "thinkers"), have also recruited him for coaching roles...

so it's hardly an indication he is "dopey"...

BTW, he actually made his country first grade debut at 17 as a halfback....just grew to big to stay in that position...

Does that top being a caretaker at NRL level?
Obviously not, but that was not the question....and it's not like Hannay improved either side he took over...cowboys were coming 12th when he took over and he took them to 14th...sharks were 9th and he took them to 9th.....

and all this talk about his great input into the QLD's game plan....what have QLD actually changed in their game plan? Can anyone say what they are doing differently? Its pretty much what they have done...

don't get me wrong, I think Hannay is a decent option just like Ryles is...but his resume isn't that so far ahead of the other options...he just seems to have good media connections..

in fact Hannay has only really got gigs at the less "resourced" clubs or where he has played...while Ryles has been "recruited" by the better resourced organisations (Storm, Roosters and wallabies).....does this indicate something?

Hannay and Ryles are both average options. Wouldn't surprise me if our shit club decided to hire one of them.

Yes it does. If 10 other teams went better than you then you didn’t have a very good season.
If you won half your games and finished 11th then the difference was f**k all and can be accounted for by randomness (luck) over 24 games. Two teams with worse differential jagged an extra win and made the finals.

11th is as good as 8th, or as bad as 13th... Let's just call the whole thing off and call it a cluster f**k.... No guilt, no blame just bad luck, no resources....

He will get 3 more games before end of June.

If the club haven't announced the new coach by the end of month the board have clearly failed this whole process.

They said they basically sacked BA on May 1. So that's what 2 months by end of June.

How long does it take to appoint a coach for 2025. We can't be waiting to mid to late August to make a decision.

We are tying our hands behind our back recruitment wise the longer we wait.
How much recruitment is even possible right now? We have Lomax on his way next year and the only players off contract (i.e. clearing cap space) are:

Asi
Cini
Harper
Makatoa
Ogden
Simonsson

Aside from Lomax replacing Simonsson, the rest of them could only be replaced by nuffies (or retained). Will nuffies give a shit who the NRL coach is? They will be playing for Nathan Cayless most weeks.

Surely you realise there's also the possibility of some players moving on early through mutual agreement, swap deals etc?

You don't need to prepare the excuses for your pointless 2025 coaches-aren't-responsible-for-anything posts just yet
😂

It's about weeding out the shit merkins who got comfortable under the old coaching regime and making some deals post haste to get them elsewhere asap. At least that's what I'd be using the rest of the season to do. We're not playing finals football this year.

Even if the 2025 coach doesn't start officially until 1 Nov, I'd be letting him look under the hood from right now and seeing where to change things while there's still some wriggle room in the market...

Definitely.

An article suggested we're going to announce a decision by the end of June. I'd give the new appointment control (or "input" if that's how our club rolls) over recruitment and retention etc from mid-July onwards.

Point of difference’: Why Eels are eyeing off Cheika, coaching rookies

Michael Maguire has been ruled out of contention for the Parramatta coaching job as CEO Jim Sarantinos says the Eels are prepared to back a rookie mentor, or left-field option Michael Cheika, to fill one of the NRL’s toughest jobs.

Parramatta have begun interviewing leading candidates to take charge of the flagship club, with highly rated assistants Jason Ryles and Josh Hannay considered front-runners on a list that has Cheika as a cross-code wildcard.

Maguire will not be considered for the post following the Blues heavy Origin I loss and the all-encompassing nature of the NSW coach’s Origin campaign.

“Madge [Maguire] spoke to someone from the club, and he’s obviously and quite fairly said that his focus is on NSW and the Origin series,” Sarantinos said.

“We respect that, and so he won’t be a part of the process moving forward.

“We won’t be delaying our process until the middle of July [when the Origin series finishes].

There’s no fixed date, but I’d like to think we’ll be able to wrap this up sooner rather than later.”

Interim Eels coach Trent Barrett has also held discussions with club management ahead of Monday’s crucial clash with Canterbury, where he last held a head coaching role in mid-2022.

Sharks assistant Hannay has declared his pursuit of the Parramatta job after his own caretaker stints at Cronulla and North Queensland, while sources close to Ryles have indicated his genuine interest in taking over one of Sydney’s biggest clubs.

Ryles rejected a four-year offer from the Dragons last year to return to Melbourne as Craig Bellamy’s possible successor, having worked at the Storm, Roosters and alongside Eddie Jones in English rugby.

Sarantinos refused to confirm Parramatta’s full list of interview candidates. But he acknowledged Cheika is an intriguing prospect considering his rugby resume includes success with the Wallabies, Waratahs and Argentina.

Cheika’s man-management impressed when he took charge of Lebanon at the last rugby league World Cup, with Parramatta’s million-dollar halfback Mitchell Moses a huge fan of his approach.

Plumping for either Cheika, or a rookie coach, is viewed as a gamble given the expectations and pressure Parramatta deals with as a flagship club that’s striving to end a 38-year premiership drought.

Asked whether Cheika loomed as a genuine contender, Sarantinos said: “That will be determined as we go through the process, right?

“He’s obviously had a long career in coaching and some touch points with rugby league at different stages.

“He’s got a lot of experience and he’s obviously put forward his interest. He’d be a very interesting guy to have in the process and brings a point of difference that we’ll explore.

“We’re looking for someone who has had experience in winning programs and can come in and set up a high-performance culture.

“Whether that’s an assistant who’s served a strong apprenticeship or an experienced coach, we’ll just work through the process and assess who is the best person for our club.”
