Eels players Re-Signing

There has been quite a bit of talk lately about recruiting players from other clubs to play for Parra, but has anybody heard the latest on contracts being offered to any of our current crop off contract?

I thought McKinnon and Widders maybe would have been offered something by now, Hopkins also. It's just usually you hear in the local rag that So-and-so is close to re-signing with the club. But so far zilch. Someone put my mind at ease, after todays win I just want things to keep getting better!

yeah hopkins ain't up to scratch. widders i'm still a bit fussy about, but if he keeps on playing like he did today then i'll have no worries with us re-signing him

mckinnon deserves a 2/3 year contract fo sho

pp,

Hi,

Long time no see/hear.

You make a very valid point about Widders. If we need to spend money on anybody, it is him. If we also need to give someone else more of a go, it is also him.
Widders never fails to let us down.
He is a surprising talent, given any challenge.

Please Brian, back your convictions even further and give player Widders a proper opportunity .....ala Wagon/Vella etc.....

i'd like to see Hopkins stay, he is a great player - far better then Wagon
McKinnon should be re-signed, he is (hopefully) our long term fullback
Widders :? , early in the yr i would have said "let him go" but if he keeps playing well i'd like to see him stay aswell, he can be a great impact player off the bench

These are the guys coming off contract as far as I remember:

Widders
Hopkins
McKinnon
Muspratt
Pearson
Peek
Prince
Kativerata
Langi
Kaufusi
Pai
Webster
Grothe & Thorman have options on their contracts I think?

I agree that priorities from that list should be McKinnon, Widders and Grothe.

Some of the others are handy players, but all could be given the chance to test the market after June 30 then come back to us for a final offer. By that time we should know if any major signings are afoot, and know how much $$$ we really have etc. Then we fill the gaps from this list or upgrading some juniors.

I have a feeling that Widders might be one of those year-to-year propositions so another 1 year offer might be forthcoming; at one stage he was playing for free at the roosters so money doesn't seem to be his motivation. As for the others it is more likely a situation where Parra are looking at who they sign before they commit too much to these guys; some are on more money than we realise (Muspratt for one) so they could use a big chunk to get 2-3 top class players. Aside from McKinnon and Widders, I don't think that other clubs will be bashing down the door for this lot.

We have some excellent forwads coming through and we dont need players on the list above stopping there devlopment.....We would probably save 800k from our salary cap by cutting these players.

I am pretty sure I heard, at the end of last season before we signed him, that Corey Pearson was looking at getting into coaching - I think Parra may have brought him over for 1 season with the intention of then slotting him in as assistant coach somewhere.

not prince, we have to keep ronny.

otherwise, mark my words, he'll be our next tonga. the first club to give him a regular chance....

i dont wanna think about it.

thats quite interesting strider, about pearson into coaching. but if hes got another season in him, i'd def get his signature down based on the enthusiam he showed last night. Him and vella were relentless with their runs, never backed off for a second - well i guess that goes for tsoulos as well. damn that guy is tough. what a machine

jake you mean prince?

if so... i think the best performance hes had for us in FG was panthers last round 2003. one of the few games hes had an opportunity at fullback. showed a lot of confidance.

sure, at centre/wing or whatever esle hes definitley been average.

and after going to so much effort to counter-offer (i think it was manly; i wish i hadnt destroyed my short term memory a few years back ;-) ) it would be a shame to lose him.

just on prince, as I just posted in another thread, he told me yesterday that he has been tabled an offer for next year and he seemed as though he was happy with it and keen to stay.

And maybe Luke O'Dwyer off contract too? I'm not sure...

I thought that too but we have an option in his contract too
And as far as I know Parra are taking the option up so he'll be here next year

This is how i'd have them at the moment:

Definite re-sign
McKinnon
Grothe (take up the option on his contract)

Worth considering re-signing
Widders
Hopkins
Langi
Prince
Thorman

Definitely NOT to be re-signed
Muspratt
Peek
Kaufusi
Pearson (retiring)
Pai
Kativerata
Webster

I also think Langi has to be resigned imediately, he was great yesterday for us, and i think with more ball he could be even better.

I wouldn't sign Widders, he had a good game but it's well known that he is very inconsistent, but if he plays like he did yesterday more often.....resign him.

Mckinnon is a gun, i gave this guy a heap of shit, i thought he was not up to first grade.....by god im wrong by a long shot on that prediction, but im happy to be wrong on these occasions :D

yep!

yesterday's game would of made it agonising for management who are at that stage of the year when hard decisions need to be made on some futures.

I think you may have the right to call "Bingo" on that assesment Renny!!
