Eels release Kieran Foran

I'm surprised that a half a million dollar bet on a regular NRL match is not very unusual. When I hear people from the tab or whoever talk about big bets they've taken on games, they're never anywhere near that amount.

The ACC mentioned match fixing generally as being vulnerable to organised crime in about 2011.

The public should always be sceptical of announcements like this from police bodies. They are often as much an attempt to justify increased powers or budgets.

Remember the match fixing nonsense around the Australian open this year? Fuelled by a new task force which basically used the event for its own publicity by recycling very old unproven allegations.

This allegation is about an individual compromising a few players. It's serious no doubt. Potentially a serious criminal offence by anyone engaged in betting on the event with inside or corrupt information.

But is it really a case of high end organised crime?

a matter for police and nrl investigation for sure. But using claims like organised crime and fat tony is buying into being conned for a second time.

When did the ACC comment about the NRL match fixing?

I can't find the actual press release, but the media have it as it is being quoted all over the shop.

The organised crime squad is in the early stages of examining information relating to alleged match fixing in the NRL,' a police spokeswoman said.

'No further comment is appropriate at this stage.'

SkyNews

Todd mentioned the ACC and NSW Organised Crime Squad in interviews.

Manly's turn to be on the front page.

Manly: We are bitterly disappointed that the Club's hard earned 70 year reputation for fair play has been unfairly tarnished

Might have been 500,000 $1 bets in order to cover their tracks...

That would still show up, it's really about the volume of bets on a particular game ( or market in that game). If a normal game takes $1million in bets and suddenly it's $1.5milion then they will probably have a closer look at it.

Joel Cain (sportsbet) was on MMM last night and said that they flag all irregular betting to the NRL and authorities. He also said that you can't open an account without various forms of ID etc so he reckons that it's hard to place shenanigan bets these days and not stick your neck out.

Is that true ?

Gotcha!

So, maybe 1 million separate 50 cent bets then?

If there is a will, there is a way.

One of the newer bet companies called me last year and offered me a free bet. Said yes and they opened an account for me. Didn't provide any id or supporting documents. Have no idea how they got my contact details and the details they had and used to open my account, has my DOB as incorrect.

Opened another account this year for our betting sydnicate and again no evidence was provided they just sent me an email advising they have verified my detail so don't need to provide any support documents. I think they may use individuals credit record to confirm details.

They wouldn't let you withdraw without providing ID though.

Which goes to show the bookies don't actually give a f**k about money laundering legislation they just like to use it as a possible excuse not to pay. Or to delay paying.

If someone loses a million dollars they won't raise any issues about suspicions someone else is betting on the account.

You can bet your bottom dollar though that if those Foran bets had won half a million they would have refused to pay on the basis that the account terms had been breached

Yes you need a verified account but I hardly think that someone who is into rigging football matches would shy away from a little bit of identity theft.
