Eels rookie in shop window

By Steve Mascord
April 08, 2007
PARRAMATTA Eels unveiled a 20-year-old five-eighth destined to be one of the NRL's hottest properties as they ran seven tries past a listless Canberra last night.

With Nathan Hindmarsh dashing 60 metres for the longest try of his senior career, the Eels embarrassed the Raiders.

But the talk was about debutants, five-eighth Blake Green and centre Krisnan Inu.

Green, a Hills District junior, revealed he was not contracted beyond 2007.

"Hopefully I can pick up a spot somewhere else, if not here," Green said.

"I'm passionate about the place. I love living in the Parramatta area and I'd love to play for Parramatta for the rest of my life.

"But I want to play first grade, so wherever I can get a position, I'm happy to play there."

With so many clubs searching for a halfback, the Eels youngster could be sitting on a pot of gold if he can impress this season.

His manager Isaac Moses said: "Manly were interested before and a couple of other clubs have just kept tabs with him.

"He wants to play NRL and if he can't do it here then he's willing to look at places where he can."

Five days after capturing the competition's imagination with a shock win against Newcastle, the Raiders started strongly. But when Hindmarsh took a 12th-minute hit-up on his 40-metre line and ran through the teeth of their forwards, it was game over.
Canberra captain Alan Tongue said referee Gavin Badger called second rower Neville Costigan offside before Hindmarsh waltzed through.

i know 1 game doesnt make or break you, but we were so much more fluent with him in the team, green has the quality and the ability for first grade, we all can see that hopefully our front office can see that and say this kid def has a future at parra.

i have said it before i believe that green @ 6 and T Smith at 7 is prob our best combination they compliment each other, he has a great kicking game and he can take on the line.

Canberra where pretty bad last night, but they are the same age as him and it shows when your pack is playing well and you are not making to many errors then you are always going to put plenty of points on.

####

1. Hayne/Burt
2. Burt/Hayne
3. B Smith
4. K Inu
5. Grothe

6. Green
7. T Smith

####

This could be our combination for the next 3 years, Local Talent in first grade plus guys coming through our development program.

it's a difficult situation to be in we're a club with several up and coming halves and we're not going to be able to keep all of them.

Tim Smith
Blake Green
James Maloney
Kris Keating
Trent Hodkinson

juniors

Cam Speechly
Albert Kelly
Daniel Mahoney

all of the above with the exception of James Maloney atm, have firstgrade written all over them.

I thought his kicking game in the second half was outstanding. Haven't seen anyone find space like that all year. But what do you do with Finch?

Will Finch play next week or will Hages stick with his original preferred combination?

Last night was the first time this year our halves have looked good. Admittedly Canberra were not at their best and not really a good benchmark to line up against, however I thought Green was very good considering it was his first grade debut. He looks like a good organiser and his kicking game was solid as was his defence.
I have never seen him play before not living in Sydney and not being able to attend games but what I saw last night I liked and would like to see him hold the 5/8 spot over Finch next week who has not been able to combine well with Smith at all so far.

Must choose between Smith and Green as our 1/2 because Keating is the most talented 5/8 in the club.

yeah I agree

I've only seen him a few times, but he is all class, got a few years to go yet, he is only about 17 or so I believe

I'd like to see Hodkinson play, alot of people have big wraps on him and he seems to have a good combination with Keating

even considering all that, I'd still resign Green for another couple of years then asses the young blokes in a few years time

When you have 2 kids like green and smith, potentially they can be playing together for the next 5 to 10 years, you are bound to loose players.

We just have to make the correct decisions now.

Our past record has been pretty poor in retention, i am just hoping that this year we finally get it right.

Inu is a straight swap for Tahu
Mateo is basically the swap for Widders and what we lost in terms of that spark of the bench
Green is and should be our 5/8th

Finch, well if he was playing at a certain level that warranted T smith to be changed then fair enough. This is a professional sport and from where i sit i dont care who you are if the coach thinks you need to be dropped or something then they should take it on the chin and work harder to get back in.

What injury did finch have? i mean i never heard that maybe Hagan wanted to test the boys out this week

PJ started, pig coming of the bench last night was a great call, Pig did some good things last night he had a better game made some good hits, some good runs scored a try out wide, cleaned up some kicks ...

Piggy is prob better in that role these days,

tbh I agree with Cadinal Keating is probably the most naturally gifted playmaker or the lot I think we need to choose between Tim and Blake.

Whilst Green looked the goods last, I'm sure that Finchy would have looked good as well behind the dominant pack.

On balance however, right now I'm hoping that Finchy soon walks out to play local footy at Wee Waa with his mates. Might solve a few problems. ;-)

it does appear that Green will get his chance again on Friday night as Finchy is in serious doubt.

I wouldnt get ahead of ourselves with Blake's effort last night.

I thought he was solid. Nothing more, nothing less, but to be fair, thats all you can ask for from a rookie in his first match.

If Finch is out next week, it will be interesting to see how he goes against a better Penrith side, because to be fair, the Raiders were pretty awful last night.

I'd like to see him kick the ball more. He has a great kicking game, if he plays and we win next week, I'm sure he'll have a lot to do with it.

Which was way better than anything finch has dished up this year. Don't think anyones getting to far ahead of themselves just pleased to have someone at 5/8 who actually contributed to the team.

People should lay off Finch a little if he has injured ribs from the Tigers game that could be a reason for his below par game. I also think Green is a better 1/2 than 5/8. Not sure who I would offer a long term contract to out of Tim and him if it came to a choice, probably Tim at this stage. As long as we lock up Keating and Inu long term. I believe people are getting excited about Greens debut but dont forget about Keating stepping up to prems and dominating. It is great to see the young blokes getting their chance and doing well but what about a wrap for our forwards that were said to be so soft after 2 rounds.

lastnight would of done him the world of good even though he was very solid at best he now has a sniff and knows what it takes but in saying all that he hasn't proven too much to anyone yet other than the fact that he can hold his own in the top grade.

but you're right it wouldn't be about money for him and the competition for that spot at the club is really hotting up, the Tigers can do with a decent 7 at the moment.

First move of Hagan's........swap pig for pj. Good move. I have been saying it all year. Pig is better off the bench.
