Eels' show of faith in Cayless

PARRAMATTA captain Nathan Cayless will lead the club into a record 11th season with Eels coach Daniel Anderson yesterday declaring the veteran certain to remain at the helm in 2010.

Cayless will lead the club in what shapes as a sell-out first-round clash against the Dragons at Parramatta Stadium on March 12.

The show of faith ends speculation Cayless was set to be dumped for close mate Nathan Hindmarsh, with his starting place under threat in a pack boasting Fuifui Moimoi, Tim Mannah and new buys Justin Poore and Shane Shackleton.

Anderson yesterday told The Daily Telegraph Cayless was guaranteed the captaincy in 2010.

"Barring any injury Nathan Cayless will be captain in round one against the Dragons," Anderson said.

The longest-serving captain in the NRL, Cayless was handed the leadership at the age of 21 in 2000 by then Eels coach Brian Smith after Dean Pay retired.

The 31-year-old captained New Zealand to victory in the 2008 World Cup before standing down from international football and then endured months of speculation about his future at the Eels.

An upset Cayless was later forced to defend his contract amid claims he was chewing up too much of the Eels' salary cap.

i presume the captain wouldn't start off the bench?

imo an 80 minute player should be captain

I don't think there was ever any chance DA would take the captaincy away from Cayless and I think he is right to back him to remain captain. I trust Daniel Anderson, I know he knows and does what is best for the team.

I support DA in whatever he decides. Good on you Nathan, now get that deserved GF premiership you have been dreaming for so many years now.

I've always thought Fui needed to start to give us early momentum - but with Poore here now, I think it gives us more flexibilty and I'd be happy for any starting combo - maybe even switch it to suit the opponent and break up any monotomy during the season

Rnd 1 only. No guarantees for subsequent rounds people. Don't read too much into the whole Telecrap article.

I'll has it a guess that Anderson will start Cayless in round 1 and will leave Poore on the bench to protect him from a few friendly cheap shots by his mates at the goons
