Right, because we have the players to score from second phase  And don't mention 2009, because we actually had a bloody good back-line then.

the backline doesn't create the 2nd phase.

It's support play.

It's the forwards chain passing, hitting holes and getting their arms free.

In this pack, Hindy, Fui, Horo, Benny, Reni could all unleash 2nd phase. But they have not.

I reckon Mannah could learn to hit and spin or like webcke in his later years, hit and pass.

Exactly my point. We don't have support play!!!! Our former outside backs could finish plays and back-up, but this team simply cant because they aren't good enough. Not mentioning that really, our best offloaders are the gone. Do you really think throwing it around wily-nily like last year would have ended with a better season this year?

who said willy nilly?

Look what Souths did today.

It wasn't willy nilly. It was very controlled.

We don't even go near that.

Support play is will. It is enthusiasm and supporting when you know 9/10 you don't get the ball.

Because we have killed 2nd phase, no one wants to support.

We actually do have second phase.....but hey, the way we played last year with the offloads was great and all. And Souths almost always throw it wily-nily.
You are missing the point, we don't even have any good support players or offloaders. Add to that we were shit for a year and a half under Snderson and it's obvious that offloads would be cut.
You'll also likely find we will offload more next year.

Sometimes you contradict yourself Boxy. Any backline player can offer support play. But if the entire side is coached not to offload and to hold the ball the entire time then the support players just don't run those lines because that is not part of the game plan.

yycheng makes a valid point.

I hate Matt Keatings silly darts from dummy half and stupid predictable inside balls back across the ruck.
I hate that dumb predictable hitup from Hindy that leads to a ball out the back.
I hate the ball behind to Burt that ends up with him stopping before the line and changing direction.
I hate our marker defence being non-existent.
I hate having the slowest play the balls.
I hate that we're the new laughing stock of the NRL after getting belted by souths.

He makes an extremely valid point. A few mistakes from offloads are the lesser of two evils.
I'd much prefer 17 blokes eager to be running off players and sacrifice a Few errors.

But more importantly, offloads create an extra defensive headache.
At the moment, teams know to tackle Parra and turn them on their back. Don't worry about wrapping up the ball because they won't offload.
They can set their defensive line for the next play and concentrate on shutting down hayne.
We got murdered by simple offloads tonight. And we had absolutely no answer.

We had arms free a couple of times tonight, but no one was within cooee.

Yeah exactly. You need to keep your opponents second guessing and that includes bodies in motions and the wide back rowers and centres running lines. If you don't have that it makes your attack too predictable and the opposition just have to keep their line to defend against you.

That post (or "point") makes no sense? It was obvious that offloads would be cut, but likely that next year they'll be back... and an unnecessary Anderson reference just to top it all off

Boxy, I don't think you realise that Kearney is coaching our players not to make offloads or go for second phase. Those good support players and off-loaders from late 2009 are by and large still in our current squad, just not being used to their potential.

Just as the coach deserves credit when we compete for 80 minutes with the top teams, the coach has to also be held accountable for his chosen structure and game plan, when that structure fails dismally as it did tonight. making contunal excuses for Kearney will get very tired by half-way through next year, if he's one-man saviour Sandow does a hammy or something in Round 1.

Having had time to reflect on last nights game I have come to the conclusion that it wasn't a very good game for us.
