No way would Kearney have gone into the game with only one halfback unless he had to.

It's hardly fair on those players to be withdrawn from the NSW Residents side in the off chance there's an injury.

That's about as much of a merkin act as what Ricky Stuart's about to do in dropping up to 3 players from his squad who could have played for their clubs this weekend.

It's a curtain raiser and that's it. Who cares? They'll be playing in front of an empty stadium. Being selected for first grade that particular week is much more an achievement. Club football is much more important and that's why smarter clubs refused to let their top reserve graders play just in case there were injuries.

Well mate, the players do. For a couple of guys stuck in reserve grade, it's nice that they've been recognised as among the best in reserve grade, and it's good to give them a chance to show their wares. Especially Humble who is coming off contract.

It was important enough that there was an Eels Reel about the pair of them. Not everyone can be a first grader, Eels Dude, and part of team building is not making people feel like they're just cogs serving a machine. It's counterintuitive but that's how it goes.

But they weren't selected in first grade; Robson and McGuire were.

Which clubs kept players out without selecting them in first grade?

What I mean is, a call up to first grade would mean a lot more to those players than being called up to a meaningless curtain raiser.

What I mean is, a call up to first grade would mean a lot more to those players than being called up to a meaningless curtain raiser. Playing in first grade is showing your wares moreso than playing a best of the best reserve grade match.

And to answer your second question both Newcastle and Manly called a player each up originally into their first grade squads and they were subsequently replaced. Manly especially surprising since they're not even playing this weekend.
