Match Report: University v GPS 17/03/07
An Elia Tuqiri inspired backline produced a near flawless display of running rugby for GPS in its 63-3 hammering of Brisbane BMW University at St Lucia on Saturday.
Cousin of Wallaby star Lote Tuquiri, Elia crossed the line four times on the visitors way to a ten try romp over the inexperienced Red Heavies.
The Gallopers charged out of the gates from the start and by half-time had already pushed the lead out to 45-3.
Despite resting key players Atkinson and Tuquiri for the second half, GPS still managed to post another three tries as the home side were held tryless.
GPS has clearly stamped its authority on the Premier Grade competition, and Gallopers head coach Mick Heenan said he was delighted with how his side had opened its 2007 campaign.
Im obviously very happy with the performance, Heenan said.
The whole team played some really exciting football, it's been a great start to the season,
Elia (Tuqiri) and Timmy (Atkinson) were brilliant again, but it was the whole backline performance, they all played some spectacular footy, he said
After his worst loss as a head coach for Brisbane BMW University, Nick Stiles was brutal in his assessment of the game.
It was an absolute flogging today, Stiles said
They (GPS) are a very good side, they can move the ball very well and theyve got very good catch-pass skills, their back three are dynamic and really targeted our weakness today in that we didnt mark up on them well in defence,
We were probably lucky Atkinson went off early, I think hes an outstanding footballer and playing at club level hes just a class above everyone else. Steve Miller is another club player who deserves an opportunity in the national comp - hes a very honest footballer, he said.
Despite the loss, Stiles said his team must learn from it if they were to have any chance of making an impact on the competition.
The only positives that could come from the game are if we learn from it. We know were very young and inexperienced and well only pick something up from that game if it can make us a better team in terms of development, he said

Jeeps bag nine tries against Norths
Donovan Slade - 21 points against NorthsSunday, April 22, 2007
Competition leaders GPS have made it seven wins from seven starts after defeating Norths 61-14 in round 7 of the Trinity Queensland Premier Rugby competition.
In a nine try domination of a youthful Norths side, the Gallopers had the four try bonus point secured by halftime, leading 35-0 at the break.
Jeeps' centre Donovan Slade grabbed a personal tally of 21 points, with a try and eight conversions, while Australian Sevens captain Tim Atkinson and wing Byron Roberts each grabbed a brace of tries.
GPS captain and no.8 Steve Miller was first to score, hitting a hole from a superb short ball from flyhalf Elia Tuqiri.
From there on the floodgates were open with Mark Donaldson, Jason Hynes and Chris Wright also grabbing five pointers.
The Eagles managed to cross twice in the last 10 minutes with GPS ahead 54-0, with Norths centre Alan Glyde and winger Quinton Mateo crossing, with flyhalf Matt Peterson converting both.
GPS head coach Mick Heenan gave credit to his mobile forward pack and electric backline.
I thought the forwards were magnificent again, they were really mobile around the park and dominated the Norths pack, said Heenan.
Fullback turned flyhalf Elia Tuqiri was one of the best for the Gallopers and the switch to the playmaking position for the flying Fijian was handled with superb confidence and a cool head when attacking.
Elia (Tuqiri) is a great player wherever he plays and he added some real unpredictability to the backline attacking raids, said Heenan.
We played very well today, but just around the corner is Easts, Wests, Sunnybank and the Gold Coast, so it's no easy road, added Heenan.
The flyhalf and halfback combination for Norths of Matt Peterson and Mark McLean was a standout for the Eagles in what Norths head coach Chris Roche described as a disappointing performance.
We have a very talented squad and they all know how to play rugby, but the lack of desire to win is clear when they are under the pump against quality sides like GPS, said Roche.
It was good to finish strongly, but GPS really let us score, they knew they had won and were just cruising, said Roche.
Its been a reasonable season so far for us; two wins isnt bad, but I have high standards and we need to lift our game, he said.
GPS 61 (T Atkinson 2, B Roberts 2, J Hynes, D Slade, C Wright, M Donaldson tries, D Slade 8 con) def North Brisbane 14 (G Courts, A Glyde tries, M Peterson 2 con).
