I'm pretty sure Frank Puletuea was in a new zelands squad at some point last year, or maybe it was the year before.

Was selected in NZ squads but as yet has not made his full international debut (other than for Samoa).

Yeah he was in the squad.

And whoever said Frank Puletua has been our best forward, I reckon he's beaten only by Pritchard.

PENRITH pivot Peter Wallace is set to turn down an offer to replace skipper Craig Gower as Panthers halfback by pledging his allegiance to the Broncos.

The lure of partnering Australian, Queensland and Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer in the halves under Wayne Bennett is believed to have been instrumental in prising the 21-year-old from his junior club.
In a positive development for the Broncos, who yesterday confirmed the loss of Test flyer Brent Tate, Wallace is poised to agree as early as this weekend to a two-year deal with the premiers believed to be worth about $150,000 a season.

Wallace would have to reject a luring counter-offer to remain at the Panthers, his junior club.

Panthers coach Matt Elliott was tipped to implement a sensational backline reshuffle to keep Wallace at the foot of the Blue Mountains – in which the Melbourne-born playmaker would replace skipper Gower at halfback.

Gower was set to return to hooker, where he began his first-grade career in 1996, given the likely departure of 30-year-old hooker Luke Priddis at the end of 2008.

It was hoped Wallace would move to halfback, potentially to partner off-contract Manly pivot Travis Burns, who is being courted by the Panthers.

Brisbane has rubbished claims it too is in the market for the Sea Eagles pivot, who has also attracted interest from North Queensland and the Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old admits the lure of partnering Test and State of Origin halfback Johnathan Thurston in the Cowboys halves is a tempting one.

"To play with a halfback like Thurston would appeal to any five-eighth," Burns said.

"I'll have to take everything into consideration. Manly have been good to me over the years so it's going to be a hard decision to make."

Auckland-bound Test star Tate will depart Brisbane with the club's blessing.

"If I was his dad I would have said to him 'go son'," chief executive Bruno Cullen said. "He got offered a very good contract and we didn't even table one back to him. Under the salary cap, and given the offer made by the Warriors, our best advice to Tatey would be to take it.

"It's sad to see him go. It's always disappointing to lose someone of his quality. He's been with us since school and he's been a great contributor to the club over the last number of years.

"The salary cap does that to you unfortunately."

Brisbane remains confident of re-signing young stars Greg Eastwood, Joel Moon, Darius Boyd and Steve Michaels in addition to marquee trio Petero Civoniceva, Justin Hodges and Shaun Berrigan.

"I needed a fresh start. I felt I needed another challenge," Tate said.

"It was time for a change. The easy thing to do was to stay in Brisbane

Seriously what the hell are we doing in the recruitment department, Wallace certainly isn't worth the ridiculous figures some would like to throw at him, but his potential certainly is work $150K IMO over say two years.

Wow, wallace looks set to go, Elliot consiedring moving Gower back to hooker, he obviously sees what we see in that he has been ineffective, we are courting Travis Burns, looks like we may be in the market for a new halves pairing.

Panthers head office needs a kick up the arse

Wasn't it Forest Gump who once said, 'Stupid is as stupid does'.

However, I still think Peter Wallace is replaceable. Joel Clinton is not.

We simply do not have the front rowers within the club to cover his loss.

Woolnough is not as good as Clinton so therefore he is not an adequate replacement.

We still need to recruit two quality forwards, one being a front rower and at least one outside back.

I have consistently read on this forum and on PI our backs 1 - 5 are fine. Who are we kidding.

We have finished outside the eight in 05 & 06 and are unbackable odds to finish outside the top 8 this season.

Interestingly supporters of other clubs don't rate our outside backs! Most opposition supporters consider Rhys a very good & dangerous fullback, Luke Lewis to be a solid but not great centre and recognise Michael Jennings has considerable potential but our outside backs in general dont strike fear into our opposition supporters. While we may rate them most dont!

I disagree in that I think our 1-5 is our strength at the moment relative to other areas that need improvement (halves, front row, bench).

I think Rhys is a top 5 fullback when in form, however he has ups and downs and at the moment he is down on confidence. However I think he has been utilised differently this year in that he hasn't been allowed to run as much with the ball but rather is passing a lot more and this goes against his strengths, although he has set up a couple of tries through cut-out balls. Still a player that the opposition fears, a gamebreaker.

Gordon has been outstanding this year. Has speed to burn, makes great runs out of dummy half and is a good finisher (and kicks goals). Is only in his second year of 1st grade, will get better and better. One of the best young wingers going around.

Lewis hasn't had his best year but has played a couple of good games (city v country). Is a fringe rep player who when healthy is a consistent try scorer with the ability to run and pass. I rate Lewis highly but understand if others don't.

Jennings is one of ther most exciting young prospects in the NRL. Blazing speed, great footwork, he has the potential to develop into one of the best centres in the game. Already a gamebreaker with the potential to be elite.

Rooney is overrated, simply a finisher who tries hard, nothing more, he will be gone next season. Youngquest played very well last week and deserves a chance. Daniella is another highly rated junior who has a lot of potential.

So we have,

Wesser - Proven gamebreaker, currently down on form
Gordon - Young stud
Lewis - Consistent fringe rep
Jennings - Elite prospect
Daniella - Unproven

The thing is I think our backline is under-utilised, they don't get early ball from our halves and this limits their opportunities (Jennings' best runs come from dummy half  ). Gower is still used to having to cover up the backlines weaknesses, when now they are our strengths. Maybe we need a winger if Daniella/Youngquest can't cover the role but I think this is way down on the priority list.

The backline has a lot of potential, you can't say that about any other players on our team (except Moors, Grant).
