KNIGHTS great Andrew Johns yesterday attacked the credibility of South Sydney coach Jason Taylor over his claims that rival Michael Hagan had departed Newcastle for Parramatta leaving the club in a state of disarray.
Responding to the extraordinary post-match outburst on Sunday - where Taylor told Hagan he'd "f...ed up Newcastle" - Johns said the Rabbitohs coach was off the mark about Hagan's impact on the Knights.
"He won a premiership at the club and if you have a look at players like myself, Ben Kennedy, Danny Buderus . . . when did we play our best footy? It was under his coaching," Johns said.
"I'm not sure where JT (Taylor) is coming from having a crack over something he obviously doesn't know too much about."

Taylor let fly at his coaching rival on Sunday, saying: "How f..... are you. Brian Smith's rebuilding what you f..... up (in Newcastle)."
Hagan claimed yesterday he hadn't fully heard the comments directed at him after the pair had crossed paths following the game.
"We walked past each other after the press conference and there was a bit said about the warm-up," Hagan said.
"But he was a fair distance away from me when he apparently had a bit of a swipe again.
"I haven't really got much more to say on it to be honest other than I think I left Newcastle in a pretty good state.
"We had a top four finish last year and the Jersey Flegg side made the grand final and four from that team are now playing first grade.
"I don't think he is all that qualified to comment on that, do you?"
Johns, who rose to superstar status under Hagan's coaching at the Knights, agreed.
"Hages has had a massive impact on the Knights and doesn't need me to talk him up," Johns said.
"Bedsy (Buderus) is still playing great now but back in 2005 when he won all the awards, he virtually carried the side that year.
"(Taylor) must have just been caught up in the emotion of going back to Parramatta Stadium and being on the losing side."
Asked about his own influence on Hagan's coaching, Johns said: "All that stuff about me coaching the side when he was here was garbage. Sure, I had input but so did all the senior players."
And while Souths said the issue was "dead as a doornail" yesterday, Eels boss Denis Fitzgerald fired another potshot at Bunnies CEO Shane Richardson.
"I didn't think Shane Richardson was still at Souths," Fitzgerald said.

"All comments in recent times have come from Peter Holmes a Court or Russell Crowe."

The fact that Joey doesn't realise our club in disarray speaks volumes of his apparent 'loyalty'. He may have played out his career with us, but not before gouging us for more than he was worth on two separate occasions in recent memory.

you really think so?

you think he would be as marketable as a mercenary who went for the big payout at the end of his career?

remember ch9 jumped in to stop him going to union. he stayed primarily for the $$. I love the bloke as a player, but lets not re-write history here.

Of course he could have, but he was never going to leave. He just made sure the Knights increased his pay packet by rumours of going to Union and the UK. A loyal player wouldn't have jerked the club around to the point they lost a player like Ben Kennedy, either.

Its laughable that you think he wouldn't!

Actually, IMO, he was very close to leaving. I think he would have finished his career in England if given the chance. Remember how much money BK wanted? Remember how much money Reyno wanted? To blame Johns is ridiculous.

Johns was worth more than 500k. No other player could win games like Johns regardless who was around him. IMO, the ARU would have paid upwards of a million dollars for him, thats before sponsors and things like that. There is no way he could have made that kind of money in League.

Johns taking money is not the reason the club went to sh*t.

Don't drag BK into this, we signed Reynoldson for 15k more than BK initially wanted.

Who would you rather have?

Joey is still helping the club out, and his off field input will be invaluable. He is probably a big drawcard for team sponsors as well.

BK left because he was sick of waiting around for Johns to make up his mind about going to union. He got the Manly offer and Johns was still dicking around so he took it. The club couldn't offer BK a contract until they knew how much Johns was going to cost them, same thing happened with Tahu if memory serves me correctly (could be wrong though). In all honesty the money we paid for Johns last contract was over the top, we definately didn't get the value for it.

I also read an article years ago that said Hages would buy a cake for morning tea with the office girls on the Monday after a win.
That would have been expensive for him in his first few years - not so much in his last few.

Maybe the tightarse didn't want to stump up for a teacake so many times so he hobbled the team through coaching, recruitment and retention.

He certainly was successful.

he wasn't going to England long-term as he didnt want to leave his son.

his options were a Sydney club or Union.

Ch9 wouldn't have come riding in if he went to union. he also would have lost alot of Newcastle-based sponsors.

A Sydney club would have paid him similar coin to us. He would have lost alot of Newcastle-based sponsors, and his Sydney marketability was not hampered by him being a Knight.

On the options realistically available, Newcastle offered him the best overall pay packet. not saying that is the only reason he stayed.

once again stranger shows a lack of thought.

Johns taking money is not the reason the club went to sh*t.

not arguing. but him dicking us around (multiple times) had an effect.

The Knights took a bullet for the game over Johns.

No one in Rugby League wanted him to go to Union, and the Knights were encouraged to pay well over the odds for a broken down old guy for the credibility of the game as a whole.

We have had some salary cap relief for him this year which is only fair.

Other teams that are now saying it serves the Knights right for signing a dodgy contract were all preying for us to do it before the fact - and would be spewing now if Union was parading around Johns before every test match. (and he'd probably still be playing if he went to union where a head high like SBWs would not have happened.)
