Entire Wests Tigers Board Sacked

Liquor and Gaming NSW has opened an investigation into the running of the Holman Barnes Group, conducting interviews with the three directors who have been banned for a combined 15 years.

As reported by this masthead last month, the Independent Liqour and Gaming Authority was recently made aware of the disharmony on the HBG board, the majority shareholder of the Wests Tigers and the owners of the rich and powerful Wests Ashfield club.


That disharmony on Wednesday led to the banning of three HBG directors – Tony Andreacchio, Rick Wayde and David Gilbert – for alleged misdemeanours dating back up to five years.

Before the disciplinary actions of the HBG, ILGA forwarded concerns to L&GNSW, the agency responsible for overseeing the legislation that governs registered clubs in NSW. The regulator has since opened its own investigation to determine the severity of the situation and whether ILGA needs to concern itself with the running of the HBG.

The regulator did not respond to detailed questions about the nature of its probe, but in a statement a spokesman confirmed it was “aware of allegations recently raised concerning the Holman Barnes Group”.

“As those allegations are currently under assessment, no further comment can be made at this stage,” the L&GNSW spokesman said.....................................

Clubs in NSW are the ultimate gravy train.

Casinos marketing themselves as community institutions.

Gain power within the club and you can contract out all the services such as catering and cleaning to your privately owned business. Renos to your development company.

Like all things that seem too good to be true the main thing is to keep a low profile and avoid all outside scrutiny in regard to the behind the scenes operations.

It's very onbrand for the Tigpies to not even be able to accomplish that.

I can relate...I just shake my head whenever I talk footy with friends about WTs, I have little tangible argument for anything thats occured....only a sliver of hope

He often says to me that he wishes Balmain had joined Souths in the fight to exist as a stand-alone club then he still might have his old team to support. Yes, Barney Miller is a true classic. A lot of these comedy shows today could learn a thing or two about writing from the guys who wrote it.

If the clubs that merged or folded in the 90s were just able to hang on for a few more years literally all of them would be alive now. When tv rights deals were being counted in the millions there wasn't enough to go around. Now they're counted in the billions and we can easily afford 20 clubs. It is sad we lost so much history and heritage. Most of the historic AFL clubs survived that awful 90s period and now they'll last forever.

Clubs like the Tigers and Magpies could have easily been looking towards their 120th birthday celebrations in the coming years.

Instead we had the Norths-Manly debacle. Luckily Manly was able to be reborn but sadly we lost Norths.

The St George-Illawarra merger was the least worst of the lot. It basically turned into the Dragons just partially relocating but retaining their colours and brand.

The Wests-Balmain baby has turned into this mess.

If the TV revolution was fast forwarded just 5-10 years it all would have been avoided.

ARL were already looking at a Super League format. The plan was 14 team comp, with only 5 in Sydney.

the only part of the plan ARL and NewsLtd disagreed on was who should hold the pay tv rights (and given the NRL rights basically gave Murdoch a monopoly on pay tv in Australia for the next 25 years, it was obvious a fight worth having)

ARL only started talking about tradition when they started losing clubs to SL.

This version of the NRL that we have with 9 Sydney teams is the most generous version of events that could have happened.

What absolute crap. Balmain would have died within 3 years, Wests wouldnt have seen another season. Souths got back in, congratulations to them (well to George Piggins, no one else at the club did anything) and by 2004 were about to die again before being bought. Souths got lucky they had a Hollywood celebrity who was willing to put his life savings into the club otherwise they would have died. Theres still too many Sydney teams imo, if one of them dies the NRL should just let them and put in a team elsewhere.

That is absolutely correct but as someone who went through those two years it felt like an eternity. To go from watching every game of the round to not watching any foory whatsoever was brutal. However the saying short term pain for long term gain well and truly applies here.
