Outside of the technical side without it they'd probably still be the meandering corpse they were before.

It generated new investment, better fan engagement and changed their brand for the better.

Except that it didnt, in their second year back in the comp their highest home crowd was 11,201

That is absolutely correct but as someone who went through those two years it felt like an eternity. To go from watching every game of the round to not watching any foory whatsoever was brutal. However the saying short term pain for long term gain well and truly applies here.
Ever been to the old Redfern oval ?

I went once in the 80s it was scary

Ah crowd numbers...

Definitely a true barometer of investment and broader interest.

Tv rights merchant and endorsements are all driven by them to.

Do you also use the number of active blacksmiths as your guide to economic health of an atea?

I get that, but long game you are now a glamour club. You lived without a premiership for a 1800s lifespan, surely 2 years isn't insurmountable

Two billionaires and an Oscar winner as owners.

Every second café in the from the inner west to anzac parade (and many beyond) have souths merch.

Yes mate, diabolical crowd figures clearly indicate that the fan engagement is through the roof. Just like bands love it if they get no one turning up to gigs as long as you stream them on spotify.

Since you're such an expert what were their endorsements in the few years after coming back in as opposed to 1999?

Irony that 100k could be bothered to march to save them but only one year after being back less than 10% of that could be bothered to watch them.

TBF it wasnt only souths fans there. I went in a group of 5 and only 2 were souths fans. So from that very tiny sample size you say it was more around 40k souths fans.

No. I got through it but I wouldn't wish it on any fan of any other club. It left a huge hole in my life those two years.
Manly and Souths showed mergers don’t work

I’m sure there’s a load of Balmain and Illawarra fans that would wish their clubs had fought it out

Bears coming back but being based in Perth is way better than the northern eagles

I'm not entirely sure mergers don't work. More so putting 2 shit clubs together (Tigers/Wests, Saints/Illa) just makes 1 shit club, or 2 clubs that hate each other (Manly/Norths) is never going to work.

This is entirely old ground, however Ive always said for the sake of the game (and this is as an old Balmain fan) it should have gone:

Norths to Gosford
Illawarra merge with Cronulla
Wests fold or merge with Canterbury (essentially a Dogs take over)
Balmain fold or merge with Parramatta (essentially a Eels takeover)
Dragons stand on their own or fold

Exactly what I was going to post. Many who marched were fans of other teams protesting against an injustice. There were also Souths fans from the country who came down to take part but who couldn't make it to most games. Then again this is Perth Red we are talking about. Reality isn't his strong suit.

In their defence I went and saw Souths at the SFS play the dogs with about 23000 others after they were let back in and they got hammered. One dogs player scored 5 tries from memory. He lay on the ground in the in goal and counted them out on his left hand following his final grounding. Anybody who went and saw them after that deserved a medal.

Given it's not public record in 99 you're aware I can't get exact figures but given it's one of the highest revenue clubs now clearly that has changed otherwise they wouldn't have been on the block.

Bands is a vapid comparison as everyone with a brain understands the economic difference for the band for tours versus album sales.

You also keep ignoring the investment that occurred shortly after. I get ignorance is your stock and trade but how about you try to be better in 2025

It's always been a poor argument for it but it did make souths counter culture cool.

Sure it doesn't get people to a game but it sold hats and t shirts.

Ahh yes 'its the vibe'

My entire argument is that the club being purchased is what made them successful. Your argument was that Souths being booted out for 2 years turned them into the club they are today. When they came back into the comp they were the same shit show that they were prior to being booted. Less than 12 months after readmission the excitement had gone and their fans were back to having bumper stickers and reminiscing about Scott Sattler and Bob McCarthy.

They started to get a bit of cred and media exposure once Maximus got on board, prior to that it was borderline embarrassing to say you were a Souths fan. After the players started rocking up to games in Armarni suits and getting celebrities in the box the jerseys started going up and suddenly being a souths 'fan' was seen as the cool thing.

George did a great job in getting them back in, then went straight back to running them like clubs were run in the 80s, the board implored him to change but he wouldn't, he was running them into the ground. Luckily for them they ousted him, got Crowe and the Trust Fund baby in which made them what they are, or were. If Rusty didn't come along Souths wouldn't have survived past the 00s.

South’s were always a big name

Souths juniors wanted to take over the seniors but Piggins refused it

Had that happened they would never have been kicked out

If Balmain had gone with trigaboff they could’ve gone alone too. Harry was ticked off they didn’t go to him to jv the league club development rather than some random developer Benny Elias found
