Eric Watson: New coach Elliott is no lame duck

I've copped a bit of flak since I've been back, usually along the lines of, "Any more big bold predictions, Eric?"

It seems some people found our media conference last July, where we outlined an ambitious new vision for the Vodafone NZ Warriors, quite controversial. Especially when we went on to drop eight straight games in a row.

Put your head above water in this country and it's inevitable someone will be looking to push it back down in the hope you'll drown in a sea of humiliation.

In some ways that's not such a bad thing because it does keep one focused, not only on the consequences of winning but also of losing.

I stand by what was said last year. A line has been drawn in the sand and the national dream of the Warriors winning the NRL premiership is something we are utterly committed to making a reality. Owning the Vodafone Warriors isn't business in the purest sense for me. The compelling reason is quite simply the desire to win the NRL premiership someday - it can't come too soon - and bring it to New Zealand, to take it away from the Australians.

Nothing would please me more.

The NRL is one of the world's toughest and most exciting competitions; it is comfortably the most exciting and even sporting competition throughout Australasia.

The Warriors are the biggest sporting franchise in this country and are a critical part of the competition, but that must never be enough.

The announcements last year were important in terms of a strategic mentality. We needed to show we'd mapped out where we saw ourselves heading - and it wasn't about maintaining what had become the norm.

A case can be made supporting the view the Warriors haven't done too badly, in fact a lot better than most clubs in the NRL. We've been to the grand final twice in the last 10 years - only Melbourne, Manly and the Roosters can better that - and we've reached the finals more than most, too.

It's still not good enough, though. Not acceptable for the owners, the board, management, the football department, staff, the players or all our loyal members and supporters.

What happened at the tail of last year is even less acceptable.

So with the season not far away, how are we placed? We're in very good hands with new coach Matt Elliott.

I'm told there's a belief Matt landed the job by default. That's an insult to all concerned, principally Matt. Yes, we did go close to agreeing a contract with one other person before he was hired. It was one of the league's so-called super coaches with a proven track record of success in the NRL. He would have put bums on seats and presumably have made us competitive instantly.

But he dithered. It allowed us to go with the man I felt had interviewed the best and had the best background and vision for the Warriors. He had impressed on every level imaginable, especially his whole-of-club vision. The other crowd-pleasing option may have given us a quick fix, but I was actually relieved it worked out the way it did. Above all Matt provides an asset the club hasn't had since start-up coach John Monie in 1995 - a coach with NRL experience.

Matt (who by the way has a diploma in education and a degree in sports science) has been even more impressive than I expected and has brought world class coaching colleagues with him, including Carl Jennings (ex-Crusaders, Bradford, Canberra) Andrew McFadden (ex-Canberra) and Brad Morris (ex-UFC fighter and high performance expert).

The talk finishes in a couple of weeks. There are some tough games early in the season, like our second-round match at Eden Park against the Roosters.

With Sir Owen Glenn's joint ownership involvement as well, we have a franchise that's walking the talk about putting the best resources in place, having spent more than $1.5m on upgrading our gym to the best NRL standards.

As inspirational US motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said, attitude, not aptitude, determines altitude. The Warriors are a club with that in spades.

I just find the whole article odd really. A fairly glaring piece of anti NZ sentiment in there, and completely defensive.

Not sure being part of that article does the Warriors any favors, surprised Becht didn't stop it. It paints an us v them prose, creates a "wonder who their real choice as coach was" situation, all in all none of that helps Elliott.

wonder why eric felt he needed to give that interview. would have been smarter for him to keep quiet until after the start of the season to see whether there`s been any improvement to last year.

he`ll look like a total clown if we continue on the way we have during these pre-season trials.....

I'm not too concerned about the trails, as that is what they are.

I think by round 8 we'll have an insight as to where the team will be in 2013 and a few here may know of their vision as a club as a whole and the changes that Watson mentioned. I do t know much about this idea, however I thought they were going to use the Vulcans more as a step up to NRL rather than U20's which has to be a good thing

Some of the comments posted by readers under the artical brought the laughs. Most seem to be from disgruntled rugby fans who seem to think the Warriors have poached/plundered most of their future all black prospects.

The whole article did no one at the Warriors any favours, except Eric Watson's ego. It was a nonsense and should not have been allowed to go to print. I'm sure the intent was to help Matt Elliott out, but the confession that they were about to sign someone else but couldn't get the fine print sorted does him no favours at all.

I don't think Eric Watson needs to adjust what he's doing, aside from this article. As the owner, his responsibility is to invest into the right capital and help put together a compelling vision. The board monitors the policies and procedures and the financial viability, and approves major investments and decisions, I'd say its more a CEO level issue. That person is responsible for putting together the management personnel and structure. Scurrah made grandiose statements regards replacing Ivan Cleary, he took a risk and it has failed. Ivan Cleary to this day remains a very good coach and you can see by the volume of players that have gone to him or headed his way suggests the players believe he's an exceptional coach. He also had unparalleled support from John Hart, which was discounted heavily by those outside the club. Phil Gould is also an unequivocal fan of the man.

I don't though see any point for anyone (owner, board, management, player) to put their name to an article like Eric did with this one. It suggests they had a 'super' coach ready to come over, if they agreed in principle to some minor details. The board and the CEO then settled on Matt Elliott. If Elliott doesn't work out (and I hope he does obviously), then there needs to be accountability placed on that process, and the decision makers in that process.

If that's 'super', that'd be a joke surely. My only conclusion is Bellamy. Only himself and Bennett can currently be regarded as that - Hasler potentially could be.

Ives will thrive at Penrith, he gets total support from the club.

Yes indeed, and I can't help but wonder how the Aussie Warriors feel with this 'get the title from the Aussies and bring it here' chant...:?
An odd statement, you can't help but think it is self indulgent ego soothing...they must be getting serious shit about their big mid year annoucement last year and not winning a game since:lol:

the reporter should have asked Eric Watson what due diligence he did on Matty Elliot prior to giving him the job.

I did my due diligence just now but reading the panthers forum.

in short - elliot is a genuine nice bloke. high on integrity & honesty and talks a good talk.

problem - cant coach or run a club to save his life.

oh shiet.

All this bullshit by the owners to become the #1 team in AustraIasia. I hope they look long and hard at this club, from admin to coaching staff and players.

It's the absolute crap performances that you don't see from other clubs, yet this Warriors culture bumbles and fumbles its way along. I think us fans have put up with mediocrity for too long and need to demand more from this club.

Since 1995 we have looked like contenders for two years, 2002 and 03. We should've won the 2003 title and instead of backing up in 04, the team fell to bits, just like in 2012 and now 13.

Its time fans start demanding more from this club. Like a lot of us here we have been through so many lows and not many highs and we'll keep coming back to this club, but how can we get it through that we demand more? Perhaps all the talk about the team have potential is just that, talk. Or perhaps we think we are better than we are.

18 seasons and nothing to show for it is starting to piss me off a little bit
