It's a big week for us this week in Malta. We open the European Championship C competition at home to Greece. Two weeks later, we travel to Czech Republic for our away match.

The news so far...

KORKIDAS PRIMED FOR GREEKS VISIT TO MALTA

PRESIDENT TO MEET MALTA RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM

And last Saturday night, the train-on squad had their last warm-up match, albeit a poor result against the touring BARLA Emerging Young Lions.

We will try and keep you updated here for those that aren't regular visitors to our Facebook, Twitter and Official Website.

Mate, what's the make-up of the domestic comp at the moment, how many teams are involved and are you guys targeting juniors?

Re competition;
Our competition went from four teams to five this year (Gozo, Malta Origin, Eagles, Stompers, Team Pit).

They play five rounds and top two teams qualify for MRL Grand Final. The season starts pre-summer, breaks for summer and continues post-summer. Rugby League is a summer sport in Malta.

The previous Government asked us to move out of schools when we were in them but we are working with the new government to move forward.

Re juniors;
In Malta itself, we have a focus on junior pathways for younger players from domestic championship into the national team. Similarly, we have a pathway for 14-20yo's from Australia and adult male players from the UK to make their way into the national team.

We have an association with Malta Tag Rugby which welcomes children and women to play. And we regularly visit schools and work with community organisations that work with children. There is no age-based children's activity as such for Rugby League in Malta as yet.

The MRL staff is all voluntary hence doing RL development outside our full-time and second jobs. But each of the five teams has two dedicated Rugby League administrators of which many feature in or around the national squad set-up and have a developmental mindset for the sport across Malta and Gozo.

Thanks for the insight and well done to the MRL considering the lack of resources.

What was the situation with the previous govt, why did they ask you to leave the schools?

Really looking forward to this one. Malta you would assume are a more experienced side, but having a guy like Korkidas playing really balances the scales. I can't split the two, should be a great game.

Read a report stating that 300 people including the president of Malta attended. Read like a fantastic day!

Away from the result for us, it was a fantastic day.

We'd hoped for closer to 500 attendance but the Brazil match was on at the same time. And Malta is football mad.

We tried a promotion (ticket and beer) for cheaper than what it would usually cost if you purchased them individually, and it was very well received.

Furthermore, we were on the island's highest rating radio show and all the FTA channels before and after the match, advertised on the number 1 Maltese portal for the week before the match, we were on all the newspapers pre-match, and a radio station came to film for it's online magazine show.

The President of Malta met a rugby team for the first time ever, and we had a list of special guests from the Ambassador of Greece to Malta and the president of the football club the RL matches are played at, together with the mayor of the locality the matches are held in.

A Commonwealth Games athlete did the coin-toss, so we really crossed all the boxes we could to make it an event - considering the limited resources.

Post match presentation was completed at a new partner (Hugo's Pub) of the MRL, which also hosted the pre-match press conference. The same venue also has two glass cabinets showcasing the MRL's short and proud history from trophies to newspaper clippings to match balls and playing jerseys from our previous opposition.

The game itself, was physically the toughest game of rugby witnessed on Malta. And the Malta Rugby Union sent their well-wishes pre match along with good luck messages coming from all corners of the globe including NRL and Super League stars and Super League clubs.
