Just watched the Russia vs Denmark match on SBS went right down to the wire. Was 24 all at Full Time with Denmark getting a free throw right on the buzzer. With all the Russians forming the wall it looked unlikely that Hansen would land the winning goal. But he pulled it off Demark winning 25-24. What a thriller

As far as the sport itself goes to me it looks like a cross between hockey and basketball.

Some posters here suggest that handball might as well do without the goal keeper.

However, if a good keeper catch 40%, say, and a not so good one 20%, it makes a difference of several goals during one match (where each side typically score 20-30 goals).

Thus, a good keeper may be a major asset and the most indispensable player in a team.

The fact that the keeper has the 6m zone almost to himself means that, on occasion, (s)he can move out towards the attacking player having the ball, effectively blocking the entire goal. That is, unless the attacker makes a high soft ball, or passes to another player...

Watched Korea vs Iceland the other day - Korea won by 1, in the last few seconds and Iceland bloke hit the post, his teammate jumped and punched the rebounding ball goalwards but missed...great finish and it is an awesome sport to watch.

This was the first time I have seen handball its a great sport would have loved to have played it in my younger years. This game was a classic and the last goal was unbelievable.....

Too true. All I get is crappy mens indoor volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and more mens volleyball.

Doing a bit of work on european handball at uni, apparently there is a beach version of the game that sounds pretty cool. Potential for added interest in afore mentioned Danish side...

Just had to bump this thread because I watched a semi(?) last night between Norway and North/South Korean girls.
Norway has the best player in the world and she scored the match winning goal in the final seconds to win the game...it was great!
And she's also dating another player on the team...lol

I'm addicted to this sport,I'd love to play it!

How crazy was that? Korea scored with what 29min57 on the clock and then Norway still found the time to shoot and score and win!

I don't get it at all. Why do they need such a big court? There is virtually no action except at the ends.

The Gold Medal match is on NOW on SBS.

It's the final medal awarded at the games.

Iceland vs. France, Iceland has NEVER won an olympic gold medal.

GO ICELAND!

As a sport I find it far more appealing than basketball...

We live in a country that's never embraced indoor sports though, so not suprising there's not even a hint of it here.
