Not sure what Putin has to do with it but Latvia have been playing sporadically for a few years, they used to play in a round-robin tournament with Estonia and Ukraine back in about 2008-9. No activity at senior international level since then, but they've been RLEF members and had delegates at events etc so I guess they're just flying under the radar a bit. Great to see youth development in these countries though.

Have to say, I'm baffled by this... They have appeared out of nowhere. This must be a Union side playing a one-off League match. But still, no complaints, better than nothing...

Vilmars has been leading things there for a while. It became harder for him when Estonia disappeared adn Ukraine developed further.

As for the best cheerleaders, do not forget Denmark and Sweden.

I wonder if I can trace back to some Latvian heritage at some stage in my family history.
Could be my chance to play International Rugby League.

As said above, the Latvians have been around for years now.

They could potentially have the best cheerleaders in the game.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying the U18 Latvians have come out of nowhere. Surely they don't have an U18 competition, or even two teams to play against one another. If they did, we'd have heard news and match reports about it. That's why I suspect that it's just Union boys playing a one-off League match...

Seems to me that there is 1 rugby league club and 3 rugby union clubs that participate in playing rugby league. I guess they just took out the U18s from each and made a team.

"Latvia, which played its first club championship in 2013, has set up two youth sides who will play their first competitive matches next season."

Great to see some progress into the youth level in Latvia. It's a shame that the likes of Estonia and Georgia have dropped off but there's always hope of a revival in the future.

With some of the comments you make in here I'd be looking in the zoo for your heritage mate.
