Ex-Warriors CEO not sorry over breach

Warriors chairman Maurice Kidd said former chief executive Mick Watson wasn't apologetic when the pair spoke following the league club's punishment for breaching its salary cap.

The Auckland-based club was fined $A430,000 and docked four competition points by the National Rugby League at a meeting in Sydney on Monday.

The Warriors were found to have breached the cap in 2004 and 2005 by making undisclosed payments, unregistered agreements with third parties and guaranteeing payments to players after they had retired, in the form of employment with the club.

Kidd told Radio Sport former general manager Spiro Tsiros and Watson - in charge when the breaches were made - had disappointed fans and those involved with the club.

"They've let themselves down, they've let the board down ... and no doubt they've let the fans down and that's disappointing."

When asked if Watson was apologetic, Kidd said: "No".

He later said he didn't want to go into details about the call as it was generally private.

Kidd said the club was disappointed at both the fine and the points deduction.

"There were breaches, and we expected to be penalised for that, we had thought there would be a fine ... it's just the level of the fine. In terms of the penalty deduction, we thought we had made some progress on that and thought it might not be as severe as it is."

Kidd wouldn't be drawn on exactly how many players were involved in the investigation.

Warriors veteran Awen Guttenbeil said the players are meeting to voice their concerns. He said there were a few frustrations as to how the situation was allowed to happen, but that players were looking forward.

"We're in this predicament now so we've just got to get on with it," he said.

Guttenbeil said he wasn't prepared to comment on the details of the breach but was still confident the team could make the final eight in the competition.

"It's basically about coming to grips with it and not using it as an excuse at all."

F*ck off Watson

Sure they won't mind 'returning' Price and Wiki then from where they got them...

 Oh sorry you're serious. If Wiki and Price didn't want to leave, regardless of the offer, they wouldn't have.

I wonder what would have happened if this came to light towards the end of the season and the Warriors had 20 odd premiership points.

They might have copped 10-12 points rather than 4. I think they are lucky it has occurred before the seaon starts. The NRL could not have taken any more than that from them !!

Why would you apologise to someone who was suppose to be in on it from the start?

Sure an apology to the fans is in order but not to co-conspirators, which is what they said Kidd was.

exactly. kidd and watson were colleagues and both sat pretty high in the scheme of things while watson was ceo.

anyone who knew what was going on is as guilty as watson. they should be removed from the warriors immediately.

kidd seems to be playing this as if hes the innocent one. saying he made the nrl aware of what was happening, and had nothing to do with it. of course the fans are smarter than he thinks to believe that kind of bull sh*t.

Glad Watson's gone. He should be sad, not just to the game, nor the other 14 clubs, but to the fan's of the club he supposedly ran. At the end of the day, it's them who have to live with this indignity, the one's who wear the jersey's, fly the flags, get to the games at Ericsson or in minorities here in Australia, love the team with a vengeance and then get horribly screwed by the former management's lies and fallacies.

Wayne Scurrah seems a pretty honest up front sort of bloke. Maybe that's more a hope perception than reality, but he's so far delivered pretty much everything he said he would from community interactivity, support of the local game and open transparent management.

Now if only Maurice Kidd would follow Mick and Spiro the Dragon's leads...

Agree 100%. Glad Watson's gone, but I wish Kidd would fall on his sword too.
Does anyone else remember when Mick resigned and a few of us applauded him for doing the honourable thing? Maybe we were too quick in giving him any credit at the time...

I think in hindsight he sort of worked the plank before he was pushed off the plank, so to speak.

Truth be told, the on and off field performance of the Warriors over that same period was dreadful, so I think he was probably going to be terminated anyway. At the end of though, I understand he got a cushy job at Cullen Sports so that may have been in way of a trade off for going easily so to speak.
