Exit stage left: News Ltd demands Storm player sale

SHATTERED Storm players were last night told by News Ltd boss John Hartigan that several would have to leave the club to enable Melbourne to comply with the salary cap next season, sparking a likely bidding war for the Storm's four biggest names - Greg Inglis, Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk.
Hartigan said a large portion of the Storm's breach for this season was the third-party guarantees.

Stars such as Aiden Tolman and Brett Finch are off contract, while Jeff Lima has been offered a release, but Hartigan said others would have to go.

As a result, deals such as Smith's $100,000 arrangement with Fox Sports will continue to be counted as part of the Storm's $4.1 million salary cap for the remaining three seasons of his current contract with the club.

Slater and Inglis are believed to have similar guarantees, which reduce the amount of money the Storm can spend on other players if they are included under the salary cap. NRL chief executive David Gallop said the guarantees were considered the same as payments made by the Storm, even though the money came from broadcasters or sponsors for services provided by the players.

''Third-party agreements underwritten by Melbourne Storm for X amount of dollars are the same as cash, and it is irrelevant whether it is salary or an underwrite,'' Gallop said.

''If there is a signed agreement to say you will receive $100,000 from XYZ broadcasting that is underwritten by the Melbourne Storm if circumstances change, that is the same as receiving $100,000 in salary.''

With many of the Storm players' contracts back-ended so they receive more money next season, the club needs to make savings of more than $1m to compete in the 2011 premiership.

Pay cuts have been ruled out, as the amount needed to be trimmed off the club's wage bill would require players to reduce their income by about 20 per cent across the board - a figure too high for those with mortgages and families to seriously contemplate.

However, the Storm have a handful of players on the minimum wage of $55,000 who would be unable to accept a reduction in pay under the collective bargaining agreement between the NRL and RLPA - meaning the remainder of the 25-man squad would have to take even bigger cuts to their income.

''What we have said thus far is that pay cuts don't solve their 2010 problems and may not solve their 2011 problems,'' Gallop said.

He added that altering contracts to enable the players to remain at the Storm under the salary cap was also unfair to other clubs who had been unable to compete fairly for their services.

''The problem with pay cuts is that they ignore the amount that was used to take that player out of the market,'' Gallop said. RLPA boss David Garnsey and some player agents contacted by the Herald suggested the players with third-party guarantees could remove them from their contracts to help the club.

But Gallop said: ''That is tantamount to a pay cut.''

And so it should be.

Still waiting for someone other than Cameron Smith to come out and mention pay cuts. Would like to hear what the guys on under 150k have to think about losing over 30k a year to keep everyone together.

as it should be

and as I understand it, some are probably going to have to be paid out before they are sold, which also comes of the following years cap

So, if they make changes to get under the salary cap, it isnt acceptable?:?

If they were to sell off say Inglis, Lima and Cronk and those players left the club immediately would people be happy for them to start playing for points this year?

What Gallop RIGHTLY points out is that the opportunity to take pay cuts rides on the back of cheating in the first place.

Example:

Cronulla spends $17million next season to get a premiership winning squad. They get busted in 2012 and given 0 points and their 2011 premiership is stripped.
Because the players want to win a premiership, they all take a pay cut to remain together for the 2013 season so that they can have a red hot shot at winning the comp that year.

To allow the players to take a pay cut is completely farcical. They ought to be paid their current salaries, whether at the club or not; and those needing to be cut so that the Storm can get under the cap, get cut (but still paid).
It's a fair penalty.

Yes - if that got them under the cap (after adding back 3 55k players).

AND as long as they were forbidden from altering anyone else's contracts
AND only after a thorough investigation of all players contracts had been completed to ensure that nobody else was benefiting from the rorts (ie - Brett Finch? White? even Nielson?)

I can't see why they shouldn't be allowed to play on for points if that was all cleared up though.

OH - and they should be forced to pay Inglis, Lima and Cronk for the rest of their contracts; and those 3 should be allowed only to either sign with a club ALREADY under the salary cap, or sit out the rest of the season.
AND a club should only be allowed to sign 1 of them.

Gallop's going to be worried in some ways. Or at least I think he will be. With his idea, the big players could all leave the NRL if they are all committed to wanting to stay at the Storm, and that probably won't be possible if pay cuts simply aren't allowed. I can't see all of the "Big Four" staying.

Gallop's going to be squirming big time in some ways. As Gallop maintains these contracts have to be honoured in the monetary way, and the players with them at the club aren't going missing either.

It's almost not worth the bother what he's going to end up doing. If the "big four" are really willing to take a pay cut, just let them. I doubt all four of them are anyway.

Im afraid this makes little english language sense.

Looks like Gallop has learnt from the Bulldogs salary cap rort. lol I still can't believe they bought Andrew Ryan after that.

I think Gallops argumanet to that was that Storm wont play for points this year no matter what.. He said it would be unfair to say for example Inglis if it meant he sit out the season or he couldnt go to another club as it would put them over the cap.

What im worried about with this.. is now will we see GI and Slater
goto Union or the UK.

If so.. i think thats a absolute mistake we dont want these stars leaving.. or Folau.

But if Slater accepts an offer of 60 grand to go play for the Cowboys because he wants to be nearer to home. And Inglis accepts 80 grand to play for the Titans because he wants to take up surfing and Cronk accepts 70 grand to go to Penrith because his brother lives there and Smith accepts 100 grand to go to Brisbane to keep his wife happy - then thats OK right?

Can't they just do this all this season.

Nothing wrong with mid season transfers if the other club has room in their cap. I don't think they should release them from their contracts if they are planning on going to another code. Happy for them to go to England. They'll come back.

I reckon the best thing to do to bring the game and fans back to it's feet is to play out this sh*t for a while and when it is too late for the Storm to make the 8, let them back in. That's round 13. Everybody is happy then.
