Expansion won't happen anytime soon

Thought everybody would be lamenting the unlikelihood of expansion but instead find talk of us politics & corona, with somebody reckoning they know how to kill the virus. I'd tell that poster to stick NRL expansion talk but he's not much chop at that.

Anyway, the NRL is dying before our eyes. All summer watching the cricket I've had to hear about afl from commentators. The red afl ball is omnipresent. Every ad break has commercial for women's league or season or just reference the sport. NRL is no where to be seen.
Not growing, now not expanding. Losing the battle to be seen & heard.
All this talk of taking Queensland for granted & rewarding fans with new team was bullshit. Old clubs in the way, sacrificing future of game for own future which doesn't look bright anyway.
Think we need a super league...

I am convinced that AFL pay for all their promotion on cricket coverage. They deserve all the dominance they get. RL is too dumb to even see it much less match it.

You can see in the new telstra deal how good they are at brand placement. At the same time the nrl cuts telstra out, afl sign a deal that includes

  • Telstra will also expand its visual sponsorship elements such as on-field Telstra 5G signage, and continue the development of the AFL's digital assets such as AFL.com.au, club websites and the AFL Official LIVE App. The updated sponsorship also deepens Telstra's connections to AFL Clubs and extends the agreement with the AFL Players Association that engages all listed players as ambassadors for use in social marketing campaigns and other initiatives.

Expect to see a lot more afl and afl players on your screens.

Well both codes share the same oval type, its in both their interests, it would be smart if NRL started to promote ourselves with a summer sport on a rectangular ground, instead of the off season smut, porn vids or arrests that we generally promote instead

“It’s not off the table, it’s very much in consideration,” Abdo said.

“The commission and the commission chair are very determined to make sure the game continues to grow. We need to look at the business case for having more clubs.”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this in the last decade!

All they ever talk about on Fox Cricket is fumbleball. Last night during the Heat vs Renegades game they were blathering on about fumbleballers who were "great players".

Don't the idiots realise that cricket is an international game broadcast all over the world?

Viewers from overseas wouldn't know what they're talking about.

The NRL need to decide whether they want to take a pre-determined approach (picking the handful of destinations they value, and working towards THAT expansion list), or just throw expansion open to bids from anywhere/anyone, and chose the best few on their merits (ie the strength & robustness of their business cases)

Precisely.

Have they ever actually crunched the numbers.. or just TALKED about crunching the numbers?

I don't just mean that as a rhetorical question.. I seem to remember there was some work done at some stage that ended up shelved..maybe not even finished?

Beattie came in full of bluster that the game must expand or it will die. To be fair to him he did order Greenberg to undertake a comprehensive review of expansion opinions, business plan and strategy in Early 2019. The review was certainly started as the consultants came to perth and interviewed interested owners and the state govt and also in Brisbane.

Here’s a report confirming it. If it was ever finished, mothballed or ignored who can say? That’s why it’s a joke and the media need to call out Abdo and Vlandys on their current commentary that it needs to be looked at, they should be asking what happened to the 2019 review!

Good point, and I remember Todd being tasked with creating a report on expansion options.. and Shane Richardson doing some work looking into how the 2nd tier could (should?) be structured.. but nothing's come out of either pieces of work.

I remember Shane's work being buried, with reports that clubland wasn't too happy about it's direction.. and I'm guessing the same might go for Todd's work - especially if it was inching towards recommending relocations.

That 2nd article seems to infer that relocation was being looked at.

You are either twisting my words, cherry picking, or failing to comprehend what I was saying.
David Gyngell isn't at Nine anymore and the broadcasting industry has changed immensely since he left. What he wanted then, and why he wanted it, are certainly completely different from what Nine is thinking today and why they think it.
