Experimental kicking rule to be trialled at All Stars

Stupid rule. Honestly if the power-play (2nd try option) was no good, why the hell would this here be any good? The game continues to find ways to move further and further away from it's original roots. I know it's only an experiment, but so was the 2 referee system and look how sh*t that's turned out to be. f**k I hate the NRL at times.

I wish they would trial rules that at least have a chance of being picked up in regular games.

I wish the NRL stopped acting as the leading authority of rugby league. I don't mind throwing in little modifications here and there for exhibition matches but "trailing" a new rule? They shouldn't even be talk of introducing new rules to the NRL... that's of course if they wish to keep playing rugby league.

Fair dinkhum there are some wet blankets on this forum! It is pre-season All-Stars game.

FFS, just relax and enjoy it for one game.

Good experiment, could be a big momentum changer if a team is getting hammered in their own half. Would also weed out bad kickers.

u should NEVER just change rules like this for the hell of it. im all for trialing potential new rules - but crap like this will never be introduced in a million years, so why bother?

it'll fail anyway. wings, centres and full back will end up playing more defensively, it'll have the opposite effect that they want it to.

Not sure I like the idea of the Indigenous v NRL All Stars game having an added circus trick rule every year.

As a concept this match is gaining a lot of prestige and value - I'm not convinced it needs the party theme, and it may even detract from it.

I don't think this "kick for six" idea holds up very well. It's not a rule designed to create open play, just add to the tackle count. If a team succeeds in getting six more in their own half - then what? - how does that benefit the fans?

Sure there is a bit of a gasp when the kick is made, and we look to see whether they retain or lose possession, but that's it - he presumably goes to ground to ensure the 6 more tackles are banked rather than carry on with a risky pass or another kick etc. So we just get another set of the usual march up the field 6 tackles.

If introducing a contest for the ball via this "kick for six" option - with a possession risk/reward hanging on in it - then these used to exist via the play-the-ball and scrums, but RL decided the game could do without these contests.

If opening up attacking play for the team in possession in their own half is desired - then just legislate so that defending team's use their 5th tackle defence on every tackle. How? By restricting the number of defenders allowed beyond half-way eg. the team not in possession must have no more than 10 players in their opponent's half of the field at any one time.

Could be an interesting tactic for those cross field chips teams use when a devensive line is compressed.

Like the type of kicks Mullen/Dureau tried for Uate/Vuna so many times in failed 90% of the time.
your maths are dodgy as, more of those kicks from Mullen stick than don't. he went through a bit of a rough trot with them when he was out of form.

the knights would benefit massively from such a rule, especially since we were one of the teams that really struggled to get out of our own end, but it's a pretty bizarre rule. it seems pointless, and dilutes the ability of some of the best packs in the game to make metres out of their own half.

yeah, the more i think about it the more i dislike it immensely. i agree with RL1908, we shouldn't be turning this match into a clown shoes trial match.

no doubt designed to get the play makers to kick to their wingers within their own half

could also be a dud, if you were just over the halfway after say the 3rd/4th tackle, you could run back to your own 20 metre line and kick on the 5th to regain, could end up a bit of a circus

I'm pretty sure there were a couple of qualifiers in there that prevent this.

Agree. This is just another idiotic rule. Just like the 11 a side or whatever it was they ran with a year or two ago in the NYC. Or Billy Harrigan's old idea of allowing a deliberate forward pass... The refs are barely able to keep up with the current rules, let alone new dumb rules.

The game itself doesn't need any changing. Its a game that gets very strong viewer numbers. What needs changing is the total entertainment package at the game to get more people through the gate.

It's only an exhibition game at the end of the day, but I wish the NRL would stop taking it upon itself to experiment or change our sports rules. Rugby league is bigger than the NRL, what is the rest of the country and parts of the world meant to do if a rule such as this was implemented? We have already seen it with the 2 refs in the NRL and 1 in all other forms of rugby league including it's most important form which is internationals! We need a stronger international board without an NRL influence!

Interesting to see this play out

If a defensive team hammers a team then they get this and the 40-20 option

Yet if they make a good 60m in their set of siz it nullifies both options

As a defending team you will move your wingers up on the 5th tackle rather than back near the 30m line

I predict that early they ill try the cross field kick to the winger if the defending winger is deep

But if the defending winger is shallow ie up the halfway line - then you will see a 40-20 attempt

I expect in the game to see 3-4 40-20 kicks more than the kick for 6 option succeed more than twice

^ Agree, or at least, add in a 50/10 rule. 41 metres out from your own line and the ball goes out untouched a metre from the tryline is just as every bit as hard as your own 40 to the op 20

I wonder if the coaches were consulted on this one. Can you imagine the madness that would go on if someone tries this and consistently turns the ball over 40/50 metres from their own line?

We'd see some epic blow ups by the coaches :D

I can see what they are trying to do, but in a sport where field position is so important, I can't see the coaches encouraging their players to utilise it. Hopefully it stays as an All Star game gimmick only
