GOLD Coast's quest to lure a star hooker has failed, with Wests Tigers star Robbie Farah set to decline the club's poaching bid and current No. 9 Nathan Friend rejecting the club's final contract offer.

Farah is expected to re-sign with Wests Tigers as early as Tuesday while Friend declared he had been forced on to the open market after canning a revised two-year deal tabled by the Titans last Friday that featured a strict three-day deadline.

The Titans courted Farah last November after being unsuccessful in their bid to lure Australian Test hooker and Melbourne captain Cameron Smith to the sunshine strip.

Smith re-signed with the Storm last December, but Farah visited the Titans for a tour of the club's facilities and met head coach John Cartwright during the club's bid to sign him.

Expecting Farah to reject their advances, the Titans last week responded by presenting current No. 9 Friend with a slightly updated contract offer.

The updated two-year offer came after Friend rejected the club's initial pitch last year amid the hunt for Smith and Farah.

But the offer put to Friend had a three-day cut-off date which expired on Monday night.

Earlier, Titans chief executive Michael Searle said no subsequent offer would be made to the 27-year-old if the 5pm deadline was breached.

With Friend now on the hunt for a new club post-2009, the Titans are likely to offer former Brisbane Bronco Ian Lacey a contract for next season, while they also view youngster Kayne Lawton as a potential back-up option.

It is understood Farah, a former Leichhardt junior and 2005 premiership star, has received a lucrative long-term offer to remain at the Tigers.

This will mean forgoing a reunion with former premiership teammates Scott Prince and Anthony Laffranchi.

Titans centre Brett Delaney and young prop Will Matthews, 20, have been added to an eight-man players' representatives group alongside senior players Prince, Luke Bailey, Laffranchi, Preston Campbell, Mark Minichiello and Friend.

From him and Smith now. Either loyalty is coming back or some people just don't wanna be on the Gold Coast...

Na, seriously it's good to see this. Tigers fans should be relieved.

I dont blame Friend for turning his back on the offers made to him after the club chased Smith and Farah so hard. If there was any sign that he is not wanted at the club then that was it.

Expect Friend to be released from the last year of his contract to go to another club/ESL.

Titans have noone but themselves to blame.
Nothing wrong with Nathan Friend and if they seriously expected him to show faith in them after they went after Cam Smith(a former teammate who stood in his way at the Storm) and Farah then they're idiots.

Brisbane would be odds on to now sign Friend wouldn't they? I've always liked his one on one defence. His technique along with Nigel Plum have are the best imo playing in the NRL at the moment.

Friend has been fantastic for the titans. He will never be the best hooker in the game but he is a consistent performer and puts in a quality performance every week. They will regret letting him go.

ROBBIE FARAH RE-SIGNS FOR FOUR MORE YEARS

Wests Tigers is very pleased to announce the re-signing of outstanding hooker Robbie Farah for a further four years.

Off contract after this season, Farah will now remain with his beloved Wests Tigers until the end of the 2013 premiership.

A Leichhardt Wanderers junior who rose through the Balmain Tigers ranks, Farah has been appointed captain of the Wests Tigers for 2009 and beyond. He has played 95 games for Wests Tigers.

“I have always said I would love to stay at one club. Not many players get to do it these days,’’ Farah said.

“When I was making my final decision, I thought back to the start of my career. If you had told me then that I would play for my local club, win a premiership, get the opportunity to be captain, and to play 10 years there, then I would be a happy man.

“The captaincy is just massive for me. It is something I have always wanted to do. The first time I run out in a premiership match with the Eye of the Tiger blaring out in the background, I know there will be goose bumps running down my neck.

“It is a great honour.’’

Wests Tigers CEO Scott Longmuir said the re-signing of Farah was one of the most important moments in the club’s 10-year history.

“I believe the re-signing of Robbie Farah will be a catalyst for a new and successful era,’’ Longmuir said.

“This sends out a strong message to our members, sponsors and his team-mates about Robbie’s commitment to the Wests Tigers.

“It will be inspiring for juniors coming through the ranks and a great plus for us in attracting high profile players to our club as well.’’

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens said Farah remains a vital part of the club.

“Robbie was our hooker in the 2005 premiership win and it is obviously a very key spot in the football team,’’ Sheens said.

“He is a representative standard player.

“Robbie is also a local junior. We developed Robbie and it is very important that we try and maintain that sort of player.’’

Sheens said Farah’s decision to stay now means the Wests forward pack has been re-signed for the next few years.

“It gives the team a very solid platform and for a player like Robbie, he needs a good forward pack around him and there is a good mixture of experience and size there now,’’ Sheens said.

“We now have a representative back-row in Chris Heighington and Gareth Ellis. We also have a number of options at lock with Liam Fulton still having two more seasons to run.

“We have got some good kids coming through on top of this as well. We are about to start contract negotiations with Benji Marshall and that’s another positive for the club.’’
