Fenech to fight again: report

March 11, 2008 - 11:51PM

Three-time world boxing champion Jeff Fenech is believed to be preparing for a comeback.

Fenech, who last fought 12 years ago, was finalising a deal with Thai Samart Payakarun with the Australian hoping to earn $1 million for the bout.
News Limited reported the 43-year-old would fight in Bangkok in a bout pencilled in for mid-June.
Fenech beat Payakarun in Sydney 20 years ago.
Fenech, who won titles in three weight divisions, would not confirm the fight but Channel Nine's A Current Affair program had been trumpeting an exclusive story about a sporting comeback to be aired on Wednesday.
The boxer, known as Marrickville Mauler, compiled a record of 28 wins, three losses and one draw during a stellar career.
He drew a controversial bout against Azumah Nelson as he attempted to claim a fourth title and was subsequently knocked out in the rematch before eventually retiring in 1996.

Strewth, there are plenty of taxi drivers around marrickville, why does he want to beat up that one again?

I hope he makes a comeback and gets his head minced.

Anyone watch the fight last night? The old man cripple fight was an embarassment for Fenech IMO as he literally ran for the last 2 round to a booing crowd and the fight was also called a draw but with fenech winning?? (im sure i missed something there!)

Then in Azumahs speech he said 'it was supposed to be a draw but if Jeff is happy then I am happy'!!! Sounded a bit dodgy.

the fight was never called a draw

if you expcted more from two blokes in their forties who hadn't fought in a decade then you had high hopes

an Nelson said he thought it should've been scored a draw. just his opinion. not that it was supposed to be a draw

Right, I didnt think I could have heard correctly.

I knew the fight would be slow but didnt think Jeff running for 2 rounds 'to win the fight' as he said would have been quite what he had in mind to redeem himself.

Azumah and the crowd seemed to agree.

Anyway, got some hype and got me out on a tuesday night so I cant complain.

Out of interest did you see the main fight with Kickett and St claire? If so post your thoughts in the thread about it, would be interested on some other views.

Simo,

I heard Jonny Lewis on the gurgler saying that Jeffrey went into the fight with damaged ribs, Azumah was 'clued up' about it, hence the body work in the early rounds...

consequently, once they were confident that the fight was going to be won on points, Lewis told Fenech to get on his toes for the last two rounds...

regardless, what a sorry spectacle...as ED stated "two blokes in their forties who hadn't fought in a decade", yet the tabloid media fronted it up like a title fight; similarly, Mark Warren banging on about Jeffrey's toughness on Saturday 2SM, and that pathetic doco "I love Youse all"...

I didn't watch the fight on ppv, a fella in work sorted me out with a tape so I could have a butchers at Kickett...but anyone that shelled out $40 for that, when they could have spent it on the Diaz - Pacquiao match up yesterday, needs medicating

In my opinion Australian boxing is in a sorry state when we've got to swallow these 'events', or listen to talk of a Mundine - Green re-match.

I've lost all respect for Green with this shout, and as for the Man...Calzaghe's given up his belt, and Carl Froch is looking at fighting Taylor for the vacant spot, but where's the Man...considering a re-match with Green, or boiling down to fight at middle...

just give it a rest Anthony, you've obviously not got the minerals for the big ones...end of.

A beating, yes, but from a man who is surely the best pound-for pound fighter in boxing today...

world titles in four different divisions, looked fantastic at 135, and destroyed Diaz in spectacular fashion (landing punches about 4:1).

Remember, Diaz is no pushover, he claimed the undisputed WBC lightweight title from Erik Morales, his record going in was 34-1-1, unfortunately, Manny is something else.

Bit it's all about the context ED. You might not think that was a fight, but it was an example of world class boxing...you're carrying on like it was a mismatch...

now, what I wouldn't class as a fight was Barrett's blow out of Tye Fields...in my mind a result which will reverberate almost as much as Manny's, purely in that it exposed the 'soft' stats that Fields took into the bout...an ex basketball player with a below average punch power and a padded record.

Hopefully this result will make some of the telelvision/promotional companies sit up an take notice of people like Teddy Atlas when they complain about the state of the game...
