Ferdinand loses appeal

Rio Ferdinand's European Championship dream lies in ruins after his eight-month ban for a missed drugs test was upheld.

While the independent three-man panel who heard Ferdinand's appeal against the sentence initially handed down on December 19 were content the Manchester United defender did not avoid the test for 'drug-related' reasons, they dismissed his challenge to the verdict and punishment.

In also throwing out the Football Association's counter contention that the ban should be increased to 12 months, the panel, chaired by Ian Mill QC, confirmed that the suspension should stand.

It means Ferdinand, who opted to begin his suspension four days after announcing his intention to appeal, will be banned from football until September 20.

Not only does it end the defender's chances of returning to aid Manchester United's ailing campaign, it also means he will not be available to England in Portugal this summer or for their World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Poland early next season.

Ferdinand had begun the day by claiming the prospect of playing for England in Euro 2004 had kept him going during the past two months, but now that hope has been dashed, he faces a bleak six months on the sidelines.

"Having considered the matter very fully, the appeal board has today dismissed Mr Ferdinand's appeals, both against conviction and against sanction," said Nick Barron, spokesman for the panel, which also contained FA chairman Geoff Thompson and FA councillor Roger Burden.

"It has also rejected the FA's contention that the period of suspension should be increased.

"In reaching its conclusions, the Appeal Board discounted the possibility that Mr Ferdinand's reasons for not taking the test were drug-related.

"Accordingly, Mr Ferdinand will remain suspended until September 20, 2004."

The news will be a massive blow to Ferdinand and the United contingent, led today by club director and lawyer Maurice Watkins.

They had provided an analysis of Ferdinand's hair folicles to prove the record £29.3million signing had not taken drugs but in the end, the panel decided the evidence was irrelevant.

After hearing three hours of submissions, Mill and his team retired to consider their verdict at 3.15pm and delivered their crushing blow to Ferdinand just over two and a half hours later.

The defender must now consider his next course of action and has the option of taking his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

With Watkins describing the initial verdict as 'savage and unprecedented', there remains the possibility the 25-year-old former Leeds and West Ham star might decide to pursue the matter.

However, with high-profile figures such as FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Olympic gold medal winner Seb Coe declaring their belief that Ferdinand has got off lightly, the could just as easily opt to cut his losses and accept the punishment.

In any event, Ferdinand's failure to attend the mandatory test at United's Carrington training ground on September 23 has proved to be a costly error.

In his absence, the Red Devils have slipped 12 points behind Premiership leaders Arsenal and also been knocked out of the Champions League by unfancied Portuguese outfit Porto.

They have conceded 20 goals in their last 10 games, during which time manager Sir Alex Ferguson has come under increasing attack for failing to secure a replacement for Ferdinand.

He did not take the test when it was requested. Therefore he should be treated the same way as if he'd failed it.

hehe and he cried wen the sentence thingy was read out!!!

What is so funny about that? Obviously the guy was disappointed, as any of us would be in that situation, and he no doubt realises that it was his own stupidity that led to his suspension.

No other club consistency shows the arrogance that Manure show though. That is why they are hated. Did everyone hate Liverpool in the 80s? Its not just that you used to win alot, but your team and admin are arrogant pr*cks.

Not this again.

He realised he had missed the test, and called back just a few hours later. One of the testers were still there, but he was told not to come back because the equipment had been taken away (it was obviously too easy just to bring it back).

Performance enhancing drugs would not have been gone in the 24 hours before he did take the test, and he took a test where they use hair samples to prove that he did not take 'fun' drugs. And the FA has constantly said that they knew he did not take drugs.

No other club consistency shows the arrogance that Manure show though.
It's funny that you talk about consistency. Where is the consistency in this case? Bosnich got 9 months for using cocaine. Stam, Davids and a number of others got their bans reduced to 4 or 5 months for using nandolone. The Man City player didn't take the test and got a £2000 fine and a slap on the wrist. But Rio got an 8 month ban for missing the test.

It was simply because Blatter was on a power-trip to prove that he was more powerful than the biggest club in the world, and made a big deal about it and threatened to increase any ban the FA put on him. It was quite funny, he said that and then a sentence of two later admitted that he knew none of the details about the case.

lol thats funny coz usually the FA do everything infavour of ManU and esp the referees giving them every single penalty possible, avoiding red and yellow cards and never giving the other team a penelty wen playing against them and doing his best to book as many of the players from the other team as possible
Blatter hates England tho so it mite hav been his scheme to make Englands morale low for Euro 2004 so Germany can win
i was watchin Ferdinands story thing last night and i honestly cudnt understand a word he sed

Firstly, Blatter has nothing to do with the FA, so what's your point?

And secondly, example please?

As for the referees and the penalties, of course we have had quite a few bad decisions go our way when we play at Old Trafford, the home team normally has a better chance of getting the 50/50 calls. And for the last decade we have been the dominate team, which means that on the field our opposition will normally have many less chances of penalties than we will. I'm sure the same goes for Arsenal, Real, Milan, etc. All will receive more penalties than they give away, simply because they have more possession around the opposition penalty box than vice versa. Liverpool would've found the same thing during the 80's (and still will to a certain extent, as they are an above average side...as much as that pains me to say ;-) ).
