I agree the second teir could generate revenue if done correctly. Ratings, subscriptions, streaming numbers, memberships and crowds could rival the NBL and they successfully run a professional comp Australia wide and with one New Zealand side.

Difference is they get a tv deal because they bring new subscribers, doubtful a second tier would bring that many new eyes to rugby league. I think you over estimate how popular second tier comps actually are.

It’s not necessarily new eyes, it’s giving more meaning and more competition for current fans of the second tier.

I'm thinking of a second teir that includes North Sydney Bears, potentially Manly, Redcliffe (for now). I think there are a small (yes, very small) percentage of fans that would either happily subscribe to see their teams game every week in a meaningful professional comp.

I get what you are saying though, that Fox is driven by subscriptions and another RL probably wouldn't bring any / many new subscribers. The other way to look at it though is that it is additional content for them to fill Fox League with and I'm sure 9 would be interested in at least one game. It is just a little more content that the NRL can go to the negotiating table with. I'm sure they can squeeze enough to fund the comp. The AFL successfully got Fox to fund the pre-season cup for a while there and I doubt that comp created additional subscribers. Ditto the NBL, they would drive a tiny percentage of the subscription base but Fox still pay, it is about creating content that people want to watch and I think there would be many more eyeballs on an national RL second division (if done correctly) then there would be on some NBL and A-League games.

Dont disagree, we have seen with current reserve grade that it will draw in the 50-70k range which is on par or more than S15,Aleuage etc. Just getting the funding increased revenue for no subscription increase would be a challenge. You'd need a revenue for the comp of in the region of $50-60million a year at least.

Sharks join up with Fiji. I posted this in the confirmed signings thread so it got some traction.
Great move by Cronulla.

Fiji is a step closer to joining the NRL.

In a major move towards the expansion of the NRL competition into the Pacific Islands, local Fijian team, the Kaiviti Silktails, will field a team in the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup competition next season - with the Cronulla Sharks joining forces with the Silktails.

Beating the Wests Tigers to form an alliance with the Silktails, the Sharks will help develop the next-generation crop of Fijian stars by exposing them to the club’s coaches, training facilities, fields and programs and other key resources.

The Sharks logo will also feature on the Silktails jersey when they debut in the Ron Massey Cup, which sits below the current NSW Canterbury Cup.

The Silktails boast around 80 contracted players including women, a junior academy list and it’s senior men’s team.

The relationship between the Silktails and the Sharks is two-pronged with Cronulla eager to aid the development and open the pathways for a fresh wave of Fijian talent into the NRL, while also having the first opportunity to potentially sign the next Maika Sivo or Semi Radradra.

Fiji have made no secret of their desire to be part of the NRL one day, raising their level of funding towards the growth of the sport locally and in-return, their increased level of professionalism.

An indication of the country’s potential was evident in the Fijian national team’s 44-18 Oceania Cup victory over Samoa earlier this month.

The Sharks and NSWRL chief executive David Trodden will announce the historic partnership at a press conference on Wednesday.

The Ron Massey Cup is a semi-professional development level rugby league competition run jointly by the NSWRL and Country Rugby League and is comprised of 13 teams drawn from the Sydney metropolitan area.

As has been the case with the inclusion of the PNG Hunters in the QLD Intrust Super Cup competition, the ultimate goal of including a Fijian side into the Ron Massey Cup is that players from the small island progress to the NSW Canterbury Cup or NRL.

Outstanding Melbourne Storm centre Justin Olam is a product of the Hunters.

In an interview with Triple M last week, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg forecast the growth and expansion of the game by the arrival of a Fijian side into the NSWRL competition.

“There’s a fair bit of work going on around our board table at the moment (on expansion),’’ Greenberg said.

“It’s not just expansion at the NRL level, and I’ve said this before, whenever you say expansion it’s, ‘more teams, where are you going?’

“But next year we bring Fiji into the NSW competition. We’ve already got PNG in our QLD Cup competition.

“To have NSW as a fully-fledged state competition we need some regional centres to have NSW Cup teams and teams below that.

“So expansion is multifaceted, it’s not only at the elite level, it’s also at the level below.’’

Great news and smart thinking by the Sharks. I'd love to see the Cowboys do the same with PNG/Hunters.

Just wait until the next kikau, radradra and sivo etc are stacking the sharks side then you’ll see other NRL clubs rushing to partner up with the hunters and maybe another PNG&fijian side or Samoan side.

My bias aside Storm would probably make as much sense as the Cowboys. Not that many local juniors to look at but they've scouted in QLD, NSW & NZ very well. If they had first right of refusal on every player coming out of PNG they'd have a ready made junior base of their own so to speak.

Any club could do it though really.

Would be better to see sharks host a few games in fiji too, they promised that this year, regarding their lack of revenue from keeping all home games at the shire, yet the draw comes out and all their home games are at kogarah, all spin from their GM talking up Fiji as a possible home away from home, this is the perfect year to take minimum 2-3 games there in 2020 while their home stadium isnt available

I reckon PNG is safer bet. Most Fijians grow up with Union backgrounds and we have seen how quick they ditch NRL when a more lucrative Union offer comes along.

Pretty much always.

Jayson Bukuya has played and been of great service, has a premiership under his belt.

We look after kiwis, Qlders, and breed some NSW players.

You are just a bitter merkin.

Sharks promote league and you hate it.

Kid grows up in Australia, from the Shire probably had to play soccer, then if any good plays league.

From Perth probably had to play soccer, then if any good plays VFL.

Sucks to be you.
