just remove international eligibility away from origin eligibility....simple

Absolutely.

It probably wouldn't help in getting Milford or Tariq in this match as what they are playing in is a clear stepping stone to Origin for their respective states. But it would let them play for these countries at other times instead of Australia but also let them play Origin. Judging from previous comments he has made, I would guess Hayne would rather play for Fiji over Australia too if he could

If you lived in NSW or Qld before 13, or your dad played Origin, you can play Origin, if not too bad. Is all it needs to be with the extra criteria to decide which state you play for if you lived in both. Keeps Origin strong and also strengthens the international game

remove australian eligibility from origin

give all the pacific islands mid season test (same weekend as the australia v nz test)

and give them a end of season comp (pacific cup,4nations or tours)

AND THE PACIFIC ISLANDS WILL BOOM!

Is Peyroux eligible? I thought you could go up and down between tier 1 and tier 2 nations but Not sideways? Maybe he can find some French ancestry and represent them too, Its getting a bit rediculous this eligibility debate.

This x 100!

Rugby League hs a huge chance of being the number one sport in the Pacific but we just don't take advantage of it. If the Pacific Cup was played each year players will more than likely want to choose their nation of heritage if they have regular meaningful tests.

I would like to see the SOO's played on stand alone weekends and these matches could be complemented by Pacific Nations games. The NRL during the Origin period is piss poor quality and crowds just don't show up because it is half-arsed footy.

Also interesting that nz have picked a Cook Islands WC player in Isaac John, Samoa picked another Cook Islands player in Dominic peyroux, Samoa picked nz player krisnan inu, tariq sims has brushed Fiji to play for country origin. It's all one big mess!
NZ also picked a Tonga player in Havili.

You can change your eligibility every World Cup cycle I thought

I also want the games you mentioned played on stand alone weekends, but if you allow players to play origin and for an island nation then don't you think we will have a problem there? Players will sit out of playing for Samoa to play for qld. Getting "called up" to play origin just elevates it above international rugby league. Players should want to play for their country, not because they miss out on an Australian state.

Plùs 1. But I'm buggered if I have a solution, unfortunately there seems to be no appetite to either 1. Set strong rules, or 2. Abide by them.

the problem with trying to play origin and pacific island tests at the same time is it defeats the point of removing australian eligibility from origin...

the point being removing australian eligibilty means players can still play for a 2nd tier nation as well as origin (if selected)

play origin & island tests the same weekend and we'll be back in the same situation now where players have to choose between the two

Players should choose between the two. Why should they be able to play for an Australian state and another country?

The pacific island nations could simply pick players that aren't eligible for origin ie came to aus after the age of 12(?)

There has to be some ownership from those nations' selectors.

If you ask a potential selection (ie BJ Leilua) "we want to pick you, but we need to know if NSW wanted you would you pick them over Samoa". If he says yes, then pick someone who only has eyes for Samoa.

Yes Ricky, Mal, Tim and Steve are all douches, but the selectors of minnow nations have more choice than they like to believe.

"Hey NRL, put on a test match for us because we're incapable of organising one ourselves. Ohhh now you picked who we wanted :( wah wah wah"

Then you will need to accept players choosing Australia and the international game will stay like it is. Like it or not, players want to play Origin and place it over international football and there is no way this will change in the short or even medium term. The only way it will change is when international football has the intensity and rivalry of Origin and the only way this will happen is to let players play Origin if eligible, regardless of what country they play for

It's nothing to do with 'intensity' or 'rivalry', it's the fact that they get paid a hell of a lot more for playing Origin.

Pretty simple. State is separate from international football. State eligibility rules are separate as well. You can be an Australian and a Fijian, and you can be a New South Welshman and a Fijian.
Sure it's Australia's right to say it's their competition and they have to be locked in to Australia to play it, but it's 17 more players (or 40+ if you count City-Country) that won't be seen on the International stage just because Australia was selfish. Considering the lax rules that allows Inglis to play for QLD and Keary to be locked in to NSW, it's complete crap to not allow Uate, McManus and co. to play for their home nations as well.

International football does have the intensity and rivalry of Origin. England v NZ was better than any Origin game for ages.

because they can be eligible for both but only one of them is a country..

hutch pal...you need to face the facts that players can be products of the nsw/qld systems, have every right in the world to play for them....yet at international level their hearts lie elsewhere..

we all know the reason why the ARLC won't remove australia eligibility from origin....because they are terrified that theres a very real prospect that half the players playing origin won't want to play for australia....
